What the crack with these, seem to bit a fair bit of car for the money.

Probably pass on the T5 if the focus st is anything to go by mpg wise.

2.4 diesel would by ideal but a bit rare and ive not seen a manual.

1.6d could be a cheap car option, 2.0d are there different engines here.

What are the petrol options like.

Any common problems.

1.6d seems to suffer a lot of sensor plus dpf issues.

I believe the 2.0d is a better choice.

Test drove a 1.6 petrol once and it seemed a bit flat.

Owner of a modified C30 T5 Polestar here.

Great cars - I had typed out a long post with the various problems you can face, but then my PC crashed. So, this is the pinned post from the C30 Crew UK page on Facebook (I highly recommend joining, it's an incredibly helpful community):

FAQ’s

• Rear Wiper delete – Remove with tools and common sense, do not use hammer or hacksaw. Bung is available at www.killallwipers.com

• Do the £50 tuning boxes work…… Of course for 3minutes until they break things… buy cheap buy twice

• Can I get twin exit exhaust for my 1.6? Yes you can indeed polish a terd, a t5 back box will fit or don’t be a tight arse and go and get a custom made one

• I haven’t got an aux port or usb how do I put it in? Well considering you were to cheap to buy one with spec, you wont want to pay the cost of £300+ to do it properly. Your next best alternative is a parrot system or FM transmitter (the latter sounds st)

• What headunits can I buy?
o https://www.ivadu.com/gama-ivadu-20…/volvo-a...
o http://www.bluepower.se/…/volvo-c30s40v50c70...
o That’s pretty much your lot, if you have a mid range or dynaudio system, save the money and spend some time tuning the equalisers to your taste in music. Volvos have fantastic factory systems and with a little time can sounds better than some very expensive aftermarket corsa specials.

• Where’s best for remaps? Shark, Rica or Autotech

• I don’t have a trip computer can I get one? – Yes £300 for the coding from your dealer…. Or use secondary school maths and a calculator

• Somethings broken were do I go?
o www.ebay.co.uk
o http://www.volvosaabbreakers.com/
o http://www.huddersfieldvolvobreakers.co.uk/
o A dealer
o http://www.partsforvolvosonline.com

• I want bigger brakes, whats the best? 320mm from a Focus ST is a great upgrade and requires no modification to the car and cheap, BBK might need bigger wheels, Focus RS calipers DO NOT FIT

• I want a badgless grill where do I get one?
o Prefacelift – FK (if you can find one)
o Pre and facelift models – Carbonlife – look for the slightly chubby looking dude on here called Chris Mulhall with a cat on his shoulder or Mark Ogden hes a Uk supplier of the grills freshly imported off the boat/plane

• I want actual headlights not candles.. do tell? www.hids-direct.co.uk or ebay. If you buy slim ballasts they tuck inside the headlight unit (TheVole note: I put Osram Nightbreaker bulbs in mine and they're much better than standard)

• I have a warning light and a random message on the DIMM and cars in limp mode, what does it mean? fk knows, scan it with a proper tool (vida)

The T5 and D5 are the only ones with Volvo engines and (I think) gearboxes.

The D5 is the 2.4DT btw, and plenty around in manual. I had one a couple of years ago. Very quick, engine sounds lovely (IMO, very grunty/gargle sound to it) and I easily got 70mpg indicated on motorways.

I worked in a Volvo garage and was surprised at how different (crap) the Ford engine'd, lesser spec varieties are in comparison.

On the D5, timing belt is 5yrs/108,000. DPFs are regenerative and not a service-replaceable item (unlike the 1.6D/2.0D, up to around 2011ish MY off the top of my head).

All in all, I'd only go for the D5 if I went for one again. The T5 is quite rare and thirsty for the little power advantage it provides.

The later D3/D4 variants are Volvo's own 2 litre 5 cylinder engine, the D4 is 180 bhp, so similar performance to an early D5.

I had a D3 Geartronic for a couple of years. One of the few cars I regret selling. r-Design spec is pleasing. 5 cylinder engine was punchy, used to drive it to Amsterdam at the weekend just for the ride. Can easily be pepped up with a BlueSpark box. Rear seats only suitable for contortionists.

Downsides were expensive Volvo main dealer servicing, (£550+vat a year) and bits of windscreen/hatch rubber seals front and rear disintegrating. This prompted endless time-wasting ass-ery over warranty claims at the supplying main dealer. 'You must have washed it with corrosive chemicals.' Gave up after car came back from servicing with scratches down the side and a chipped alloy.

So no more C30. Nice cars though. V40 replacement a bit meh.

Geartronic or manual? Geartronic was a bit 'grandpa' if you wanted a sporty drive, great in town or on autobahns, though. Hence 'Slushbox.'

Not sure what your budget or location is, but there are quite a few on eBay including this one
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/08-Reg-Volvo-C30-2-4-D5...

Quite surprised to see that prices haven't dropped a penny since I sold mine 2 years ago
