Been toying with the idea of a new car but torn on what to do. A bit of background...

Currently driving an 06 mazda 6 mps (64k miles), which I like but it's getting a bit long in the tooth. That said it does everything I need it to do, powerful enough, nice interior, a few toys, although certainly not cheap to run with abysmal mpg (not really a concern) and £300 road tax, expensive maintenance etc and a worry that the timing chain might go at any time
Car is not needed for work. Averaged under 4k miles per year last 3 years and don't expect this to change. Mixture of going to the shops, golf course and weekends away
Decent sized boot needed for golf clubs/trolley. No kids
Budget - anything up to £15k

Undecided on whether to continue running the mps, sell it and add £6k - £7k to get something slightly newer or go the whole hog and chuck in £15k for something nice which I'm finding hard to justify with doing so few miles. I do like my cars and don't want something boring

Been looking at everything - focus st estate, passat cc, lexus gs250, leon estate cupra, s4, 5 series

What would you do/recommend?

Why change?

With your budget the world's your oyster but you need to workout what type of car you (Hot Hatch/GT/Super Saloon/Coupe/Barge) want, in terms of Road Tax most will actually cost more & in some cases cost more or the same maintenance wise.

You say the mazda is worth approx 6 to 7k.

Then sell it, even to webuyanycar or similar and bank the cash except for 1.5k which you will need as a deposit.

Then you lease this for 2 years, even speak to the dealer and lower the mileage to 5000 [and monthly cost]

https://www.whatcar.com/car-leasing/deals/personal...

It s about 7.2 k all in but if you keep the mazda for 2 years, it will depreciate about 3k.

So now we are down to 4.2k. They tax the car for you for the 2 years so now down to 3.7k.

Car is obviously warranted, so trouble free motoring for 2 years, in a car that cost circa 35k......absolute no brainer yes

Thanks for the suggestions.

To be clear, the mazda isn't worth £6k - £7k, probably more like £2k - £3k. I meant sell it and add £6k - £7k to the proceeds.

Scirocco's nice but the boot's nowhere near big enough. A saloon would be more suitable.

Do any of those listed make you want to look at that type of car further.

Many good suggestions, some of which a bit too scary for me in terms of ongoing costs and potential for big bills e.g. M3, S8, XFR

The Lexus stands out as being interesting and from what I've read reliable

They're very reliable & nice inside too, go & take a look you might be surprised or the polar opposite to the IS300 would be the E500 which would be my other pick.

Don't change for the sake of it, would be my advice. It could run faultlessly for several years. Changing for the whole, "what if" scenario seems a bit daft, especially when you could end up in a car which costs you a whole lot more. Better the devil you know, i say.

If it's a perfect car for you right now and there's nothing wrong with it, i'd stick with it, rather than twist and gamble.
