so you're allowed one single return trip in a time machine - when/where/what would you do with your trip?

selfish investment trip?
altruistic changing of history?
tipping off the authorities about an attack?
kill hitler (yet inadvertantly change the world in unknown ways)?
invest in bitcoin/apple early days?
buy a 60's ferrari gto?
etc
etc

the one stipulation is you have to return to today.

put some numbers down to demonstrate benefits if appropriate.

Why not combine it, go back a few years, win the lottery, then invest a big chunk of the winnings in a company via a VC firm (or direct) that you know made a killing with their IPO? Turn a few tens of millions into hundreds of millions if not more?

In Rome at the moment so fresh in my mind, but I’d go back to the time of Nero/Augustus and watch a show at the colosseum.

I'd possibly go back to ~1995, first year at university, when Simone the Irish hottie whipped her top up in her room one night and said "do you think my nipples are ugly?" and I said "no, they are fine" and she covered them up again.

I think I would slap my younger self around the face, and shout "that was a come-on, you absolute autistic retard, whats wrong with you?!".

Can you only go backwards? I'd go forward a year and get the lotto results that are still to come. Then pick and choose what I want to win, without changing the life I've lived so far.

With the stipulation to return today, anything else would be a bit stupid - someone else can go after Hitler.

Won't the thousands of Latin-speaking toga-wearing Romans wonder what you are doing there and chuck you into the arena as an extra round of entertainment?

ok, i'll change the rules as it's my thread, (because noone's going to improve on £1 to hundreds of millions.)

you are at your destination for one day only (the practicalities of claiming your winnings on the lotto would stop you being around to collect/pose in front of a cheque)

one day, one transaction or action that then goes into deep freeze for however long your gap in time is. it's actually a lot trickier than you think once you factor in the practicalities.

How long do we get to stay in our chosen time/destination?

Is it all inclusive?

ETA: Okay, just a day. I'd go to somewhere in pre-history to witness a Megalodon in the flesh.

I'd go back to before Harry Potter was written (5 years should be enough) to a law firm that I know is still in business today. I'd lodge the detailed plot of Harry Potter with the law firm (I'm assuming that doesn't break the rules). When I get back to this time zone I'd sue the pants off JK Rowling, hopefully that would get me a good few million?

Very difficult question. In fact too hard to really deal with... So we get the ridiculous, sublime and selfish.

I would go back to yesterday and have cornflakes instead of bran flakes for breakfast..

or

I would go back and kill Jesus or Mohammed before they did or said anything significant so we didn't get those religions started.
That might save a lot more lives than killing Hitler etc..

or

I would invest all my money in 1947 transistor development and make a lot more money..

or

I would visit Mr Tesla, interview him and photograph all his research notes and ideas..

So it wasnt just me (I don't mean Simone)

Looking back I missed a hat full of chances.

I'd go back in time to make sure my parents fall in love so I exist after inadvertently altering the future by my interactions, probably at a school dance.
