Driver on murder charge
by our news team

A van driver murdered an 18-year-old when he deliberately mounted the pavement following a fight with a group of youths, a court heard today.

The prosecution at Lewes Crown Court says Steven Wright, fuelled by anger and revenge, used his white Ford Escort van as a lethal weapon when he drove straight at two youths, injuring one and killing another.

David Ellwood died two days after being thrown on to the bonnet of Wright's van and then flung to the ground during the incident in East Grinstead on December 7 last year.

Thomas Barnes, 17, rolled off the van and sustained minor injuries.

Wright denies murdering Mr Ellwood, causing death by dangerous driving and attempting to cause grievous bodily harm to Thomas Barnes.

Joanna Glenn QC, prosecuting, told the court Mr Ellwood, from Dormansland, near Lingfield, and Mr Barnes, from Crowhurst, travelled to the centre of East Grinstead where they met other friends at Chuggaluggs bar.

The group left the pub at about 10.20pm to catch a train. They split into several small groups as they walked to the station along Railway Approach.

Thomas Barnes and another friend, Billy Stamford, started throwing handfuls of gravel taken from a front garden at each other. A white van then skidded to a halt. The driver, Steven Wright, walked over to the boys shouting abuse, the court was told.

Ms Glenn said: "He was screaming at the boys. He pushed one of them. He was very aggressive, gesticulating with his fists. Witnesses said he shouted at the boys, 'I am going to kill you', or words to that effect."

A fight broke out between the two boys and Wright before others from the original group left a nearby kebab shop and joined in. One landed a heavy punch on Wright's head. A girl in the group said Wright appeared drunk.

The court heard Mr Ellwood stayed in the kebab shop throughout the fracas and did not become involved.

Bleeding from his eye, Wright retreated to his van. Witnesses said they saw him accelerate from the scene of the fight along Railway Approach in the direction the group of youths were walking.

Ms Glenn said: "There were two ladies who saw the van drive off at speed, accelerating hard and veering to the left. Another witness said the van was swerving from side to side."

Mr Ellwood and Thomas Barnes were by this stage walking together on the pavement.

Witnesses described seeing the van mount the pavement and drive straight at the two friends from behind.

Ms Glenn said: "We suggest that what happened was that in his state of anger, and the fact that he had been humiliated at the scene, the defendant used his vehicle as a weapon."

Thomas Barnes was the first to be struck. He was flung up over the bonnet and roof before landing on the pavement. He sustained bruising and cuts but escaped serious injury.

The van then ploughed into Mr Ellwood, the jury heard. He landed on the bonnet and was carried by the van for 60 metres until it turned right at a roundabout, flinging Mr Ellwood on to the road. He suffered a fatal blow to the head.

Two days later, on December 9, a decision was taken to switch off his hospital life-support machine.

In police interview, Wright claimed he was set upon as he walked back to his van after asking why the boys had thrown stones at his vehicle. He said he felt dazed and dizzy as he drove off.

He said he heard a bang and saw a boy hit the windscreen. He claimed he slowed down but not so fast that he would run over the boy if he fell off.

The case continues.

Puma Thunder was a special edition they rolled out to commemorate the end of the line. 2000 were made - 1000 in Magnum Grey and 1000 in Moondust Silver.

They are distinguished by leather trim, 6CD, A/C, elecy mirrors, heated front screen, 15 spoke alloys, some fancy mats and some other tut.

Basically, I work for Ford, get a discount on new cars and the Puma was the only vaguely appealing car available... and the Thunder special edition was cheaper than the boggo one kitted up with the options.

Over the years they did a few special editions... the Black and the Millenium and the Futura in Germany...

Thunder.......a styling gimmic (visuals....colour, trim, etc) to off load the last of the Puma.

Performance wise, no different to other Puma (I believe).

- Hey, we all have to start somewhere. Given the fact that I've only been out of Uni for 12 months, and it's my second new car - wouldn't you say I was doing alright.... besides, insurance is cheap, been 100% reliable, bags of room and no one wants to nick it... not even 25 yet... so decided to give the insurance headache a miss for a bit!
