Hi All,

I thought this was a straight forward process but it seems not.

I phoned my bank, who I buy/sell shares with....I'm a novice and don't dabble much.

Anyway...I've come across a small company in Canada and I want to invest in their shares.

What are the pros and cons of purchasing outside of the LSE and also, how do I do it?

You need a broker / platform that has those shares available to trade. 100's of different platforms so without knowing the exact share it's difficult to say, try these:

Hargreaves Lansdown
Barclays Stockbrokers

You say it's a Canadian Company but which stock exchange are they listed on?

If I may add something to this, it would be issues with currency.

Since I am in the UK and I buy shares in the US, I actually lose money sometimes when the pound increases against the dollar.

This has been a bit of a pain.

You also make money on the currency fluctuations just depends which way it moves , pound goes up you lose , pound goes down you win !

Not on BestInvest, since they don’t allow you to purchase individual stocks outside the U.K.

Hi OP here,

I'm not sure which stock exchange they are listed on, I will google today.

I use Barclays Stockbrokers and they cannot help me!

Sign up with Hargreaves and you should be fine.

Might need to complete the W-8BEN form but it's pretty straight fwd.
