Since buying a BMW M3 CS I've really noticed the difference between the steering wheel on the M3 and that on my 911, basically the steering wheel simply feels too thin!

Is the steering wheel on the GT3 any thicker?

I have a msport bmw with a thick M3 wheel fitted which feels nice. However be careful before rushing to fit your 911 with similar. I have a 911 also (997GTS), which has the sport wheel but much thinner than the M wheel. The interesting thing is on a previous 911, I had the wheel retrimmed and chose a thicker sculpted design closer to the M wheel but found that although it initially felt better, the thinner wheel provided much more steering feedback than the thicker one. Can’t explain why but since steering feel and feedback is a big part of enjoying my 911, I personally wouldn’t mess with it again!

I find the thick BMW steering wheels very clumsy. Stick with the thinner wheel for a while and I am sure it will grow on you.

Agreed - the problem is the M3 wheel was too thick, not that the Porsche too thin - you'll grow to appreciate it!

If you MUST have it thicker, I also used royal and they did a superb factory like job with great customer service.

Personally I find the steering wheels on high performance BMW's much too thick. Thick enough to destroy the delicacy of the steering. It is as if BMW think that on these expensive models - the deeper your pockets, the bigger your hands.

My steering wheel on my 997.1 GT3 is thin, but covered in alcantara is is lovely. There is loads of steering feel as it wriggles around in your hand.

I prefer the engine layout of the M car. Can anyone help with the following?

I totally understand where you are coming from, I have a thick Alcantara wheel in my daily BMW and love it.

I have a sports Alcantara heated wheel in my Macan and love it...........

and with a few mods I have just installed this into my 997.1 3 for a bit of fun.

I did a 40 mile round trip via Box Hill on Sunday and.... I like it and I thought it would be much better than the standard "thin" 3 Alcantara wheel but I am not so sure...... the feedback from the front wheels now doesn't feel quite the same, I will need to put more miles on the car to decide. Note to oneself, drive the car more!

These guys do an exchange service for about 200 Eur

Just bought a flat bottomed one, it is a bit too much for an old 987 will change it for another but they have a load and some are normal round ones that are just a bit thicker. Very good quality item.

Does your wheel have buttons on either side for controlling the radio / phone? If so, you've got a multi-function wheel which does have a thinner rim, so a swap to a Standard 997 C2s wheel would do you fine - it's the same size as a GT3 wheel, just in leather instead of alcantara.

Precisely why Porsche don't do thick steering wheel rims on their GT cars, all that padding removes feel. On the 996 you could buy a CPZ thicker rimmed steering wheel. I have one, the rim is a mere 2.4mm thicker, but no more padded than the standard item.
