2k Commuter car suggestions?

With a 50 mile daily commute through London for the next couple of months, and then a move to Canada on the horizon afterward, its about time I sold off my fleet and bought something sensible for once .

Max budget is around 2,000. I'd like something vaguely interesting with decent fuel economy.

I'm looking at this at three different ways:

Small diesel hatch - Something like a Ibiza TDI or MK4 Golf TDI + Couple of hundred quid for mods to make it somewhat vaguely interesting (map, decent tyres+brakes, maybe some suspension work $$$ depending).

As someone who only did the hatchback thing very briefly , the idea of a warmish diesel hatchback appeals slightly.

Large diesel barge - Something like a W220 S320CDI or E39 530d

As a barge lover they'll soften the blow of being sensible, but I'm skeptical at how economical or cheap these will actually be to live with?

Random Bargain basement petrol car around 500, run it dies.

I'm open to any suggestions, advise, or recommendations for anywhere who is willing to fit LPG to a V12TT for less than 1000 .
