Advice on how the PSE works and what exhaust drone is?
Discussion
I've just replaced my 2001 Boxster S (3.2) original PSE with a custom made stainless steel exhaust. Needed cats replaced as well.
Just wondering if someone could explain how the original PSE operated in terms of the valves and bypass pipes to the super sound tips?
Id describe it as having a quiet rumble up to about 3000 rpm at which point it started to open up and get louder and sporty sounding. I guess that's the reason for the valves?
The new stainless steel (no valves) is much louder and feels constant. I do like it. But seems to be a lot louder at low rpms. And I wonder if people would describe it as having a drone between 2000/3000. It's like a constant ringing through your head and what you'd feel like on a plane when after a while youd want to swallow to depressurise your ears (Haha random example). Does that sound like what people would call resonance or drone? (is drone regarded as bad or is it just a given sometimes with an exhaust ?)
I guess I quite like it as it make the car sound really sporty now but is just different I suppose to the original where you could be cruising along not realising youre in a Porsche... Which I kind of don't see the point of.

To be honest, I'm undecided at the moment. but I think I do like it. It's not an every day car and the new exhaust makes it sound pretty racy, which is what you want from a sports car surely? it makes me grin like a boy with a new toy so I think that's a good thing. Had just read a lot of people commenting on exhaust drone and trying to work out if this does have it. This doesn't rattle or make it feel like the cars shuddering, just pretty loud
Just to clarify ive had the PSE removed as it was leaking. Had a bad cat as well so decided to go new custom stainless steel exhaust and cats.

A drone is a constant low humming sound. I think your jet engine example is a good one. My car has it at certain low RPM. It doesn't bother me usually, but if I'm feeling tired it is quite annoying. I only have a short commute, so it isn't too much of an issue for me. If it was present over long distances, then that wouldn't be great, but at motorway speeds I'd be over that RPM anyway.

That sounds a real pain to get drone with a standard PSE. Fortunately I have no such issues.
OP, I would guess the new exhaust will just take some getting used to.

I didn't get drone from the PSE.
It's the new custom stainless system that drones a wee bit. But overall sounds class and much louder than the Porsche exhaust.

If so, it's poorly designed. Send it back for a refund or ask them to fix it. Use of a properly designed and installed Helmholtz Resonator may fix the issue :
