I'm currently running around in a 2015 M135i which I bought new two and a bit years ago. My local dealership matched TRLs offer so I'm currently paying around £325 a month. The car has been great so far, but I can't help but feel I fancy a change, especially into something a little more.. exotic.

I don't need anything too focused as I've got a Z1000SX for the weekend, so I'd probably not go down the Elise route.

A bank loan of £18,000 over 48 months would cost around £400. This is a little more than what I'm currently paying, but I suppose since you'd own the car that becomes less of an issue, as it's really down to the depreciation. With a budget of around £20k, that's in the realm of a reasonably well spec'd 2.9 Cayman.

I tend to do around 8000 miles a year, although that may start to go up a little - but no more than 10-12k at most.

Depreciation would be fairly similar between the two I'd have thought, maybe a little less with the 135. Insurance is around £100 cheaper for the Cayman.

So, would I be mad to sell up in exchange for a Cayman?

Don't forget to budget around £1000-£1500 minimum a year in running costs - servicing, tyres etc

not mad at all - lovely cars, different to the BMW, but very nice...
your logic was mine a year ago which took me out of a leased skoda (following a Kuga) which had cost me together £18.5k over 5 years of leasing - into an e39 M5 which will cost me a lot less...

pop a little aside for running costs and then enjoy!

Both are great cars which will cost around the same to buy & run …. I’d suggest the Cayman will actually be a little better on depreciation Vs. the M135.

It all comes down to which car suits you personally … the Cayman is obviously 2 seater which has it’s limitations. The Cayman has plenty of luggage space with the front and rear compartments but you can’t get anything large in (a bike for instance).

The Caymans handling and balance will blow the BMW into the weeds.

I’d go Cayman personally.

I used to have a Cayman 2.9, and now have an m240i.

The m240i is better for my current commuting needs but isn't a patch on the Cayman as a driver's car. Ride, handling, steering are in a different league. The engine is more interesting and produces a much nicer noise despite being down on power and torque, so it requires more work but is more rewarding for it. Downsides are it's more dated inside, less toys and maintainance costs when things go wrong will be more, but depreciation on the gen 2 cars is very low.

I find the m240i a real disappointment as a driver's car in comparison, and contemplating changing for another 987.2 plus a cheap daily commuter.
