Hi,
My 330d is approaching 150k miles now and although it still runs fine and I wouldn't hesitate to take it on a 5k roadtrip around Europe I do fancy a change!
I quite like the look of either the 2 or 4 door 640d's, and I was wondering how reliable they are? Are there any known issues? Do they go through tyres like the e92's?
I have a roof rack on the e92 for mountain bikes and struggling to find something for the 6 series, are they available?
Any info is greatly appreciated

Had both, and did 70k miles in the 640d(coupe) and it was completely reliable. It was quite heavy on tyres in fairness but no worse than the 330d.
The seats are prone to an annoying rattle but I just learned to live with it in the end, so it's worth listening out for on the test drive.
I loved its shape and the interior is nice(for a bmw), also loved the performance/economy mix and it returned 40mpg overall. The steering is really numb though and is arguably its biggest downside.
As a long distance cruiser it was lovely and it had effortless overtaking ability, swapped it for a Merc 3 litre diesel GLC SUV(wanted some practicality), and the engine has nowhere near the punch of the twin turbo unit in the 640d.
Miss the 6 in many ways for sure, when I see them out on the road I look at them with fondness.

can you get these cars with rear seats that go down?
They don't fold on the Coupe, not sure if they do on the Gran Coupe though. Edited by parabolica on Tuesday 6th March 11:24
Folding rear seats are standard on the GC I'm not sure about the coupe. The GC is the better looking car IMO and the reviews state it's the better handling car also.
No roof rack for the 6 series I had a look at alternatives of which I found one, it was a bag strapped to the boot lid.
I've done 43k miles in my GC and put a new set of tyres on it around 30k miles, mostly motorway miles to be fair. The original Brakes still don't need done for another 3-4k miles. Been serviced twice and has had no faults in this time which exception of corroding tail pipes (known fault across the BMW range not just 6) and the dial for the centre airvent started to peel off. Both replaced as warranty items.
They're at a price range now which is excellent value for money. I'm only selling mine at the moment as I have an X5 on order.

cheers for the replies,
Yea they are a pretty big car, I've seen a few around and they make the e92 look small!
I have a downhill bike as well which weighs around 18kg so the rack needs to be pretty beefy, can you get these cars with rear seats that go down?
I’m told that the ’Seasucker’ will carry this. Read this thread:-Yea they are a pretty big car, I've seen a few around and they make the e92 look small!

No tow bar option or bike rack option on these.
20 inch wheels can bend, i would say as well watch potholes as on 20's you can get bulges on the fronts easily (i have had 2). Mine is much better on Winters with way more profile but prefer the look on Summer 20's.
For me comfort seats, sunroof, m sport pack (20's, HUD, HK) and led adaptive headlights (lci car so has selective beam unlike pre lci) make it a lovely place to be.
Like others said though downside is GC length. Multi storey car parks are terrifying and you will overhang the traditional British standard car parking space which is 4.8m, the GC is a whisker over 5m. To put that in context that is longer than most of the large SUV's out there.

I agree with much of what has been said above. I ran my 640d GC for 3 years from new;
- I had the squeaky seat issue - never really solved.
- I had the dashboard part of the ICE system replaced as my mine failed - not a very common issue I believe.
- Front tyres bulged and had to be replaced.
- Rears didn't last too long - not disastrous though.
- Ate brake pads for fun - depending on who you talk to, this is either entirely predictable, or isn't, and is due to my driving style.
- Back seats fold down, and load space surprisingly large as a result.
- Loads of room in the back - adults can be seated very comfortably.
- Interior is quite lovely.
- Amazing performance/economy balance.
- Numb steering.
- It's long.
- It looks great IMO, it certainly got more positive comments than any other car I've ran, including a Gallardo and other top-end stuff.
- Huge amount of car for the cash - driven by enormous discounts at the time of sale initially.

Best looking car on the road for the price i would say and holds its own even when parked to supercars. I have a 640d M sport convertible - the interior is stunning and so is the exterior. Its a big car - I would say a yacht of the road.
That was pretty much my opinion when I ran one. I would look at another but BMW stopped offering the 6 with a tow bar option which I need for the bikes.I went from a 640d to a 440i, both 2 door coupes.
Lots to love about the 640d but lots to dislike too, for me the looks and interior are epic and I think it's one of the best looking BMW's in a very long time. The engine is easily the best in class (same as the 435d) and combined with the great ZF gearbox means it's great ride.
However, the negatives for me are the numb steering and the ridiculous rear seats which are unusable.
I averaged 38mpg, 12-16k on rears and 25k on front tyres. In 30k mileage my brakes - pads and discs were fine at trade in.
The 6er is a compromise but a great car.
I much perfer the 4er, but mainly because I love the B58 engine (with the MPPSK), because the car is more agile and fun to drive and I can get people in the back!
Some epic bargains for 6er's though so really search for well specced cars with:
M Sport+ Pack
Decent leather, Dakota is crap
B&O
Adaptive suspension - £4k option on the 6er and much better that the crap effort on the 3er and 4er.

I have 640i GC, and I drive a friend's 430D GC from time to time.
Both pre-LCI.
Gotta say the steering feel on the 4GC is way more numb than the 6GC,
6GC steering feels way more heavy and less artficial in comparison.
But I do have adaptive drive + integral active steering on my 6GC, perhaps it makes the difference.

I think the rear of the 6er is really good a very nice looking car.
The interior is a step up from the 5 series which in turn is a massive step up from he 3 /4 series.
640d is the 3ltr twin turbo Diesel engine and it’s superb. Very punchy great/less noise when on the premium diesel fuel and does 40mpg with ease.
