Hi Guys.

Anyone fitted an exhaust on their Geep lately?

I'm planning on fitting a standard(ish) 'off the shelf' Escort mk2 exhaust to my Geep, which is part way through a radical overhaul. Yes, i've started it Mark. I'd like to know what alterations,if any, I should expect to make in order to get a good fit.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Perhaps one for Chris to answer?

Thanks John K

x flow or pinto?
easiest way is start at downpipe add a silencer and rightangle straight out the side
escort exhausts fit with a little shortening noting that the over axle bit is the critical location

Ta drseg - your not a real doctor are you!

Yes, it does help if I say what engine it needs to silence! The 2 litre pinto is the lump in question.

I was thinking of taking the pipe out of the side as per Alan's brute, but thought I'd try for something a little quieter!

Anyone actually fitted a standard exhaust to identify exactly which bits need shortening or 'bending'?

Keep 'em coming this should be a usefull thread for most owners eventually.

i've fitted the standard zorst to my geep, its been so long since i did it though , i cut the over axle section off between the middle and back box and replaced it with a flexi pipe ,the front portion from the manifold to the mid box is in two pieces , why i cant remember and it all works fine ,but it still sounds like a 30 year old car!, i may get a bigger bore one yet.

Usually the down pipe needs shortening unless you like the low exhaust look. Then the intermediate pipe needs some taking out to allow the rear pipe over axle bend to align correctly. It is sometimes necessary to shorten the actual tail pipe as well depending on whether it is an estate or saloon system.

Thanks fellas

Will be going out to buy a standard fit system after the Stoneleigh show, feeling a little more confident that the system can be adjusted to fit. So, now for the maker.......Ashley? Janspeed?.......I wonder.

Will add to the thread when its all fitted for future reference.

been watching this thread and wondering about the wisdom of side exit for exhaust. Mine is at the rear at present and despite fitting a deflector I am never free of fumes inside the jeep with any kind of top on.
Is there any legal reason not to fit a side exit exhaust? I have an escort set just waiting new and just begging to be modified.

I have always used side exit exhausts- mainly for their simplicity and the ease of using large bore tailpipes. Once a boy racer, always a boy racer I suppose. It's easy to use mountings bolted through the floor under the front seats. No problems with over the axle pipe clearances either. My current car uses the tail silencer from a Renault 25 V6 mounted upside down. It's not a straight through design so is not loud. Just happened to have one in the garage- shame to waste £65 worth. I always make sure that the outlet pipe does not protrude beyond the side of the car and is as high as possible- usually dictated by the pipe coming past the chassis rail- which gives good ground clearance but is also not too close to the floor. The one I fitted to the 1600 4spd was an Escort Mk2 tail silencer which I bought from an exhaust shop for £25. It wasn't quiet but sounded just like a Willys when accelerating- how authentic is that???
