I have just purchased a 1991 Targa from a friend. It’s in great condition but needs the engine rebuilt and I have had a crazy quote from Porsche in Aberdeen, which includes £10k for a new crank shaft. Does anyone know of any reputable garages who can arrange to collect the car in Aberdeen (engine is out) and fix it at a sensible price for me to then collect and drive away done and dusted?

Peter at Motortune is excellent, you'd have to get it transported down to him though.

Out of interest, how do you know the price you've received isn't sensible? Did you buy it knowing exactly what it needed...?

I bought it knowing that the engine had stopped working but the interior/exterior was in great condition. I have the invoices/quotes for parts from Porsche in Aberdeen so I know what the worst case scenario is with them

Is the engine just out or is it apart and in bits? Have they given you any insight into how they have arrived at their quote?

It’s Just out but not stripped. Thanks. It basically shows a quote for over £20k of parts, a full engine rebuild. No labour! Everyone I speak to says that this is crazy money and there’s no need, particularly the £10k crank shaft. I got the car at a good price knowing I’d need to spend a bit getting it roadworthy.

You say the engine stopped working. What diagnosis got you to the point of someone saying it needed a rebuild? Major oil leaks? Broken head studs? Oil consumption? Noises like a bag of spanners?

I used Peter and Craig at GT One in Chertsey for my full engine rebuild and would highly recommend them. Granted it was a few years ago, but the final bill was well under 5 figures and that included everything including a new clutch. Worth calling around the country to get some alternative quotes and then factor in the cost of transporting the car to wherever you choose - to me a quote for £20k of parts before you get into labour costs sounds like someone doesn't want the job and so has quoted you a telephone number !

A main dealer probably doesn't 'want' that sort of job to be honest, worth noting that transport cost to a specialist of choice will be a tiny fraction of the total cost of work.

All,
Thanks again for the advice. I have had a few contacts tell me similar and it looks like I'll be as well to get the engine put back in and for the car to be moved over here to Northern Ireland and fixed by good reputable Porsche specialists at a fraction of the price. That seems to be the way this is headed. This is my first time using a forum for anything so really chuffed that you all helped me to sense check this. I'll post up the difference in price once I have it but it looks like I'll save around £10k doing it this way. Thanks again
