So this is the day I bought my new daily (December 31st 2017) I was wondering whether to bother making a thread on it since the mk2 golf is on here as well but Its more interesting than my previous daily that i shared with the missus (a Peugeot 308 1.4) which was about as much fun as dried out felt tip pens and since I'm obsessed about cars and documenting stuff I thought I'd throw it in the mix.
So the list.
• £1200
• 11 month mot (one advisory - oil leak)
• 107,000 miles
• Electric seats, air con, cream leather interior blah blah
It was up for £1500 but I found the following faults..
• broken brake light
• whine from power steering (have since discovered it is leaking)
• oil leak(s)!
• handbrake light faulty as it stays on almost all the time
• Last service stamp is 2014 which is most likely the last time the car has had any kind of servicing judging from the condition of the oil.
But the engine and box were smooth. It is the most comfortable car I've ever driven. Mind you its the first car I've owned that was manufactured in this century so maybe that doesnt mean much.
Already have a few budget plans to refine it and I'll add a bit more soon as I've got a couple of months of ramblings to catch up on. Enjoy this example of the mundanest (is it a word?) of cars that have graced this forum.

I had the saloon version (same engine) as a replacement for my LS400 which was too thirsty.
Other than the slightly agricultural noise from the engine it was a comfy car and great for my motorway commute. The 2.0D pulls well, I got mine remapped for £150 and it made quite a difference. Bought a Merc estate and sold it on eventually, still see it around town though.

Thanks for the interest guys.. and yes your bob on to mention them as these cars are notorious for the sills dissolving, especially in the earlier cars so it was one of the first things I checked and they looked good. Sone surface rust but I'll treat that before too long.
So anyway. First thing i did was an oil and filter change. I used Wynns engine flush but left it in for 24 hours.
Yours truely there doing the oil change, as graceful as a one legged fish.
However i only used this oil to 'cleanse' the engine and then used a second tin of Wynns engine flush. I ran it for arou d 70 miles and it was as black as the previous oil which was 3 years old!
This time i used Castrol Edge Titanium 5w30.
The engine did feel smoother after the second change I must admit. Been on a couple of trips where I snapped some ok shots.

Yes, I know the S-Type was on a different platform, that was the whole joke....

Yup, i thought I'd just add it in the title before someone says it anyway! I would of loved the v6 yes but the nagging costs would prove it to be economically unviable.

I know what you mean about the noise. This is my first diesel too. I'm already feeling the economy benefits though. I've considered a re-map. Heres probably my favourite photo of Buxton (yes the name of my car is Buxton, if you can decipher why, you will have my eternal admiration. This was also driving through the lakes. Pilot and Co-Pilot.
Not all is well though. I was on my way through m62 a week ago and i put my foot down to overtake a lorry and I lost all power. It temporally went into limp mode! The glowplug light started flashing and obviously thought how odd that was. I pulled over on the shoulder, turned the engine off and turned it back on and it was fine. But I'm extremely hesitant about giving it some beans now.
After some digging I've discovered that the most likely causes are either:
- Bad injectors
- sticky turbo actuator
- failing fuel pump.
I've actually switched to super diesel which people have suggested which does cure the problem for some people. In short I cannot have a car that i can't trust so further digging is required. I dont have a management light.
I plugged in my obd2 scanner which didnt show any fault codes. I'll wait for a day off so I can spend some time on it which I dont have because I've literally got a shed full of mk2 Golf parts to categorise and refurbish.

I think these are good cars. My father has one and got it about three years ago on 100k and it's now showing almost 150k on the clock. Beyond routine servicing it's had to have the sills patched (common X-Type issue) and the rear suspension bushes are desperately needing some attention. But apart from that it pretty much just works like the Mondeo / Ford technology it's based on!

Thanks for the info and interest. I've already planned on putting a blow up mattress on the back since I can lie down fully (I'm 6ft) with the front seats pushed forwards. Plus I can haul plenty of parts and tools around without too much worry and hassle. (Why I wanted an estate).
There is work to be done I just didnt expect it to be potentially costly so soon. I'll clean out the EGR valve, change the fuel filter and perform a 'leak-off' test and go from there. I'll report baxk when something remotely interesting happens.

It was an obscure (nuts) kids film even at the time. True it is before my age (born in '86) but I was (am) odd, One of my favourite things as a kid was Laurel & Hardy! But in conclusion. The jags a cat.. and its.. well.. blue so the film Dougle and the Blue Cat popped in my head and the cats name in said film.. Buxton.you got it!

I was already going to comment before I saw your most recent post.You're being a bit ambitious expecting to be able to trust a car of this type and age.
My own car is a 54 reg C Class and I make every journey with my fingers crossed!
