Hello all.

My 996 is running aorund 83 degrees most of the time (middle of the gauge) but occasionally creeps up to 90 and then back again.

No coolant light, and I keep it topped up with the proper Porsche coolant 50/50.

Any ideas??? Is it the fan/thermostat or something more sinister??

Cheers.

? shouldn't need any topping up . That aside it looks like all the mechanical components are working fine so it must be something intermittent on the sensor / control system. I'd imagine the OPC would need to plug the Bosch diagnostic computer in to locate the fault.

It's quite common on the 996 for the header tank to split I believe. I had this go on mine last month, if you're loosing water as well as the temp going up now and again, then you may have the same issue. It starts off very slowly (i.e I first noticed mine a year ago) and gredually gets worse.

I dont know if you are mechanically minded, but it's a relatively simple job to replace the header tank yourself if you are that way inclined.

Thanks guys. It's going in for a service tomorrow (still under Porsche warranty) so I'll ask them to check it out.

As above, likely suspect is the header tank. Mine went on my previous 996. Dumped coolant all over the garage floor in the end. Got it replaced at an independent for (IIRC) a couple of hundred quid all in. Could probably dig out my credit card bill for the exact figure.

Thanks McP but given I picked the car up from OPC ten weeks ago I reckon they'll be footing the bill.

They noticed same on mine at a recent service and said it was £450 to do and not covered by the warranty.

Stick to your guns and make them pay.

Well, if they try that then I'll just hang around the dealership all day and tell every customer that goes anywhere near any of their salesman what a complete load of b0llocks their warranties are.

I will suspend my judgement until then.

I will suspend judgement, of course, until this becomes necessary.

Deffo they should pay for it after only 10 weeks of having the car....covered by the warranty or not.

Alright Rosh.

Well in it went this morning to OPC East London to have 60k service (33k miles) and they said it was the Header Tank.

Not covered by the warranty, BUT the work was done FOC anyway (thanks guys!)

Fair play to them, not so much as a peep out of them that I should pay anything other than for the service. They also fixed a loose Tip switch under warranty.

Doubtless our friend kamal996 will shortly be along to slag them off, but great service, no arguments and it's fixed.

Lovely. Off to give it a pasting now

I had the same problem on my 996 C4 - it's a common one. Amongst other things I had sorted at the time of purchase it was just about the ONLY thing offered under warranty.

It's not a wear or tear like a clutch or b pads is it???.... The thing splits - thus faulty!

bit academic as they footed the bill but worth asking why inconsistencies between OPC's interpretation of warranty terms... (Mine was done at Reading)
