So, it was March 1988....

....and I thought I was going to wet myself with excitement! I'd just been given a promotion at work which meant a company car. Better yet a car that I could specify (within a budget & reason).
I give you:

It had all kinds of fancy stuff! Central locking, electric windows (front only), electric aerial, BBS alloys, cd changer. Wow, just wow!
To say I loved her was an understatement.
She was my company car for 4 years and about 100,000 miles. Never missed a beat, although (strangely) the tail gate rusted away in no time at all. It was replaced under warranty.
During the dark days of '92 things went a bit wrong for me at work. As part of my compensation Golf was swapped for:

It was one of the very first Corrado VR6 in the UK. It even came mis-built with Euro option BBS alloys. Had them swapped for proper speedlines. I loved that car too. Problem was it was a miserable period of my life, so memories are a bit tinged.
I eventually found a new job in '94 which came with:

Leather & loads of goodies.
I ran this for about 18 months. Loved it.
To be continued...

So, '96 I got was awarded a TVR Chimaera as a company car. That meant that the Golfs were now going to be second cars.
So, I treated myself to:

Ran her for a short while, got a chance to buy a very low mileage Mk3 gti 16v at the right money

These cars get a lot of bad press....but we got on really well! In fact I ran her for about 18 years.

In '07 I bought a number plate, but didn't have a car to put it on!
Enter:

So Red Golf for knocking about in, Blue Golf for more serious journeys.
Red Golf eventually expired.
Gave me an excuse to get:

There's been more bollicks written about these than probably any other car on the planet. All I can say is it does everything just right.
Original plan was to keep R32 & R as stable mates. I realised I was never driving the R32, so she had to go.
So! 30 years this month of VW Golf (albeit one in fancy clothes).
I love 'em

Finally someone else that appreciated the mk3 Golfs. I would have loved to own a Corrado but unfortunately now good ones don't seem great value to me and cheap ones are probably money pits of rust and other problems. How do you find the R and R32, seems an unlikely combination as both kind of do the same thing.

Flame suit on .. that's a dull car history !

Each to their own!
FWIW I've a 7R and still don't think they've been eclipsed by anything else as the ultimate all round car. But then you need other stuff to stir the soul !
