I’m trying to find some alternatives to sort out the exhaust on my 996. The car is fitted with the Dansk Super Sound exhaust, fitted 2 years ago by the previous owner, and I just find it too loud.

Now I know the saying about too loud means you’re too old, but it’s just too much for me as I’d like to be a bit more discreet when driving along. Most importantly though is the drone from the rear of the car under anything over mild throttle, means I can’t hear much else and I need to raise my voice just to talk to passengers.

I’ve given it some time but I’m not enjoying it and I want to quieten it down. Is it an option to have someone hack into the mufflers and do some surgery, or would it just be easier to get new ones? I’d imagine I can resell the mufflers if I replaced them so might be a cost-effective option.

Don’t really know how loud I want it. I guess something around PSE level, perhaps slightly lower while giving the performance gain I’ve got from the current set up.

Not very PH I know, but any opinions welcome.

How about the quieter option from Top Gear https://www.topgear.co.uk/porsche/porsche-911-996-...

Top Gear have a very good reputation and there is currently a group buy on 911uk.com for 20% off! http://911uk.com/viewtopic.php?t=126107

I have a Milltek Cup system on mine. Completely unobtrusive in the cabin but gives a wonderful bark when you want it to ears

I've got pair of Dansk sports silencers which were fitted a year ago to replace the OEM (non PSE) silencers which had some corrosion. I was advised not to go for the Dansk super sound silencers by the Indy which did the work, as in their experience they were too loud to live with - sounds like this is the problem you are experiencing.
I have found the Dansk sports silencers great - the sound is a little more fruity than OEM, but never intrusive or a "drone".

When my OE silencers fell to bits and started rattling, I tried a pair of Milltek cans and they were too loud for me, they were 'on' all the time and barked too much..

I ended up going with OE, but expect a bill for £2.5K for non PSE, and £4.5K for PSE ones..

I went with non PSE cans although my car is PSE, the default on 996 start up is PSE on, and you have to turn them off every time which was winding me up, the non PSE cans are 'off' all the time and are more to my liking, still sound nice on the gas tho' but don't shout too loud about it..

Design 911 do some alternatives with or without PSE for a keener price, but noise is subjective, and you don't want to buy twice, I've still got my Millteks..!

+1, fitted my Dansk sports boxes last year and, as said above, nice sound without being 'stupid-look-at-me' noisy. Carparts4less around £600 a pair.

OP, you could always get a used pair of original back boxes off Fleabay and either send them to Carnewal for their witch craft (Carnewal GT exhaust) or get a Gundo hack done & get them soda blasted and repainted to make them look like new? A mate has the Carnewal modded OEM boxes and they make a nice noise (like an air cooled 911) & yet there's no drone at motorway speeds.

Thanks chaps, joined a group buy on 911uk for TopGear mild silencers which are supposed to be PSE level, should hopefully be better.

Thinking of adding some new 200 cell cats but need to find out what these will do noise wise.
