Looking at a morris minor 1000, looks in great condition but the compression readings on each cylinder red just 70 Ib I am told by the current owner. Googled but cannot find out if this is good or not compression. Advise welcomed, (it’s a 1970 car)

Sounds low.

Have just had a quick google and looking like 130psi+ when at peak fitness.

If it does have an engine problem and you are still considering buying it as is, here is a good website that gives an idea of the cost for engine work

Always worth doing a 'wet test' on an engine with low compression showing.

Get the seller (or do it yourself if you buy the car) to squirt a bit of oil down each bore. Then do another compression test.

If the readings are better (say 130 psi as stated) then the piston rings are shot and you can budget for more work/money to be spent. If the readings are the same, you have an issue with leaky valves or similar.

Basically, the oil acts as a temporary seal which allows the piston rings to function & seal properly.

Apologies if this is a bit "teaching your grandmother to suck eggs".

No egg sucking here so I’m grateful for advise. I have emailed the seller to ask about oil burning blue smoke and wait for reply. The car looks so original in pics I am tempted to travel the three hours for a look at it. I was looking at a A35 but decided just a bit to small for me.

It's a bit of guesswork, really, depending on the method used by the current owner. If he's just turned the engine over once with a closed throttle (as many seem to do...), then 70psi actually may not be bad.

With an SU carb, the test needs to be done by turning the engine over for at least half-a-dozen revolutions with WOT for each cylinder test - CV carbs can take a while to fully open.

I'd be far more worried about the structural condition of the car. That's where the big time and money is.

Thank you again for advise from all posters. I contacted the owner and he advised me that the engine does not burn any oil. The car looks in very good order especially the under bonnet which is extremely smart and looks solid. I am further advised that the car passed its MOT last July and no advisories, solid underneath. The only reason I have hesitated is because it’s a two / three hour drive to view and it’s ‘only’ a moggy 1000. But it seems worth the effort to look.
I will post up how I get on.
