Hello guys,
I'm currently on the search for the perfect second car, I had a claim in the first year so ncb but been driving almost 2 years. I get the ncb in August. Looking for something under 4K for the car and absolute max on insurance can be £2300ish really. Want something with a 0-60 under 8/9 seconds but not anything that looks awful. Please leave your suggestions below it would be a lot of help and I'm interested in what everyone else thinks is the perfect second car. Currently I drive a 1.2 corsa and it is painfully slow.

If the insurance on a Clio 182 is a bit high, how about a Grande Punto Sporting

Surely this is the definition of 'MX5'?

I hate Clio 182s.

If you're into them OP, try and get a decent drive in one, you might find they don't suit you as much as the internet tells you it will.
Why do you hate them? Genuine question.

Second what has been said Really Clio 182 or Cooper S! Try Greenlight for insurance; great for modified or performance cars (nearly half the price of anywhere else for me)

I bought at MX5 at 19 as a 2nd car. I had 4 great years with that car then it decided to keep breaking down laugh

I would go MX5 as it gives you an intro into sports cars.

The seating position is too high, the steering wheel is too big, there's no reach adjustment on it, the gear throw is too long, and the odd gears are too far away if you have full sized legs.

The spring rates and damping feels good, but there's too much body roll, could do with bigger ARBs as standard, and at just under 40k miles, the exhaust snapped and one of the rear dampers collapsed.

The brakes aren't much good, they tend not to make the quoted power, and whilst the interior materials are quite nice, the actual fit and build quality was a bit flimsy.

Just my opinions though, before someone tells me I'm wrong!
I have had two and whilst loving them overall, nearly everything you said is true laugh

Clio 172/182 gets my vote, purely as they're still a great drive and I think look good. MX5 certainly fits the bill in terms of performance and again, like the Clio would be affordable to run.

Slightly left field option is a Ford SportKa. My mum had one and it was brilliant to drive. Bit of an old school 1.6 8v engine, just under 100bhp but brilliant handling and a great gear change. There was an option, can't recall the name that gave it a full leather interior and AC. May be more insurance friendly than the RS Clio but actually as good fun (just slower).

What about any audis, bmws or vw's. Any specific ones that fit the bill?

Fair point tbh I looked at clios in my option I just can't stand the looks. I need something that looks good too in the future I would change parts not so much the engine but just aesthetics

Ooof, that's a big no no now, can't even paint your wheels.
