When is a hole not a pothole?
Discussion
According to West Cheshire local authority if it is under 50mm (2" in old money) it is not a pothole. To illustrate how they check holes they plan to ignore they posted a helpful illustration with the note:
"Further along the road another potential problem has been reported. Darren inspects it and explains that as it is under 50mm no action needs to be taken at this time #cwaclive"

I'm not a biker these days (nor a cyclist) but even my car would feel the effect of driving over this.

False economy, once the surface starts breaking up it continues, (the road version of cavitation damage) so instead of fixing small cheap holes they'll be back fixing big holes a bit later, probably after they've paid out a few claims for people's suspensions too.
My general impression is that money for roads is being starved and the UK road maintenance system is operating under third world conditions. A bit like the US that has the same problem (that also includes dams and bridges).
A couple of decades ago entire roads used to be re-surfaced, then they switched to just shell-gripping them to give people a good off-road experience, now they just do some small patchwork - but usually only when a mum complains that her kids have fallen off their bikes on the gravel.
The roads local to me are now taking on the appearance of the dark side of the moon, it's actually easier to miss the craters on a bike than a car now but I have to keep my eyes open!

Well, I think any remaining faith has disappeared with this one. If you need to point out the problems with this, you are not speaking to someone who is going to understand.
I imagine stuff like this is going on in every public sector area. We need more tax being paid in, but who in their right mind would be happy paying more tax when this is the level of incompetence of the people receiving it? Its a vicious circle. And the comment back "it might not be clear, but the hole is measured correctly". Why say that? Why make yourself look stupid and/or a liar - everyone with eyes knows that it isn't measured right?

king boggles, I mean I've seen some stupid stuff in my times working in engineering, I've done a few myself but f
k me. He needs to go back to holding the stupid end of the tape. I was convinced that had to be a spoof tweet, but apparently it's legit
Just yesterday Leeds City Council resurfaced the road behind our house. Great, but it was honestly the only bit of road round here which didn't need doing. Presumably end-of-financial-year money dumping, a nice long stretch with no parked cars and an easy diversion must've ticked the right boxes

I don't know whats worse, the revelation of how the council assess what does/doesn't need attention or the fact they paid 2 employees to attend and pull this stunt! Whats the cost of sending someone to do their usual bodge fix as opposed to sending 2 for this?
Makes me fear what other idiotic criteria other councils employ for grading their pothole repairs that we don't have knowledge of

Coincidentllay on the NW evening news, Cheshire West are getting a slating for building a multi million pound retail park in Northwich, which currently has one tenant.
The flip side is that it’s estimated the cost to repair all of the road stuff in the NW would be c£4billion. That’s money that local councils don’t have. The whole road network near me is failing and it’s virtually impassable in a car unless you enjoy being bumped all over the place and ruined alloys. There’s no way it’s safe to ride a bike there. They’ve patched some potholes after I reported them a fortnight ago, most of those patches have now failed.

Would be handy if they edge sealed the repairs!
nail ... head ...We recently had Virgin fibre put in around us - they made a frigging awful mess, but the difference between the bits they edge-sealed against those without, even after a relatively mild winter with 1 snowy spell, is quite shocking.
Local roads to me (Manchester inner city) is horrendous. Some proper trenches and meteorite dents. The entire city is practically 20mph, but it's a continuous weave in and around holes, and some are frankly unavoidable.
They have recently 'resurfaced' the local main road to me, and basically have disappeared 80% of the way through the job. Stuck a bunch of signs out warning of bumps and inclines, just scraped off the surface, bashed down something temporary, and not bothered to seal everything up. Joining the cycle lane is dangerous.
Apparently they only have one machine.
Unbelievable.
