Hi All

Its taken 15 years but I finally received my first NIP. (Clean licence so far)
2 questions. If I were to write a paragraph explaining the incident in hope of some leniency would it be better to send it off with the NIP or just send off the NIP and wait to see if they actually prosecute me first and beg for forgiveness if so or is it too late then and appeal would land me in court? Or call the guy listed as my personal contact and speak to him?
Second question being is this likely to help me at all as its going to be admitting to the offence before I have even been charged.
The NIP says" This is a statutory notice and does not necessarily signify that proceedings will follow" "proceedings may be taken.." Though if they have solid video evidence its a slam dunk easy one for them.

Background info.
Being the super badass that I am the NIP is for "Fail to conform to a traffic signal" "it is alleged that the driver of the above vehicle indicated to turn left, and then made a right turn, road signs showed a no right turn"

Offence was here
https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@51.6041673,-1.73745...

I know its no excuse as its clearly shown no right turn but hardly anybody obeys it, as you can see even the car on the Streetview link is turning right!
From the description of my offence I was approaching the junction indicating left and going to obey the signs but on arrival at the junction found there were no approaching cars in either direction and it being a completely safe move cancelled my indicator and turned right instead to save the 30 second trip up to the roundabout and back.
I would not have performed this move if it was in anyway unsafe, I had my dog in the back of the car (time and date indicate it would have been on the way back from her morning walk at the local country park) and she would be the first thing to get squished if I had pulled out in front of someone.
Its also not a move I would have performed if it was going to hinder the traffic behind me in any way, ie sitting at the junction waiting for the road to be clear in both directions with a queue building behind me. Though plenty of people do this.

The thing that makes me think its from a member of the publics dash cam is that there are no cameras/ CCTV at the junction and having spoken to a good friend who is a serving officer on the same force issuing the NIP. He firstly didn't believe me, and said that everyone does it there even police on and off duty (I have personally seen a few marked up police cars do it over the years not on blue light runs) and he thinks there is no way anyone he knows would do someone for turning right there, worst case scenario being if they were in a particularly bad mood would be a roadside bking. So all that leaves is a MOP behind me with a dashcam as I presume with no solid evidence the police wouldn't even bother with the NIP?

Its really got me spooked as I'm now worried that any minor, even perfectly safe, indiscretions can be reported by anyone on the road and lets be honest most of us would be without licence pretty quick if we were caught for every little thing we do wrong according to the letter of the law. I definitely wont be turning right there again even in the evening when I'm the only blummin car on the road.

I just feel the punishment is going to be a bit much for the crime. Don't know what the marker on my licence will be? but presume its going to be 3 points and £100 fine and then having to declare it on 3 car insurance policies that I'm already paying over £1k a year for for the next few years.
Also don't know if it will affect my job? As part of that I have to have a Home Office Licence with regular DBS checks, does it have to go on there or will it not matter even if it does?
Just the threat of prosecution has spooked me into not doing it again and I feel the above punishment is taking it a bit far. But I guess if you do the crime you have to do the time.

If you really want to know, reply to them saying that you are unsure who was driving the vehicle at the time, and could they please send you any photographs or footage that they may have that would help you to identify the driver accurately.

As for your job, it will have no affect on your DBS checks etc. It is not a criminal conviction..

^ Maybe so, defo be a good idea to ask for any evidence to help to identify the driver.

Maybe there was a mobile camera operator monitoring the junction?

I just like this line. Someone I know tried to avoid a parking fine saying she parked behind a long line of other cars parked illegally so it was their fault.

Sorry to hear about your quandary OP, but personally I'd just pay up.

That "no right turn" must be relatively new, as I've used that junction and not seen it before.

Maybe the police are monitoring it as people don't obey the signs?

It may well be that your police officer friend will need to disclose to his PSD department that he was contacted by a suspect in an offence and asked for advice/discussed the allegation. Plus if you made any admissions to him then it puts him in a sticky position if he doesn't disclose it, or you contest it. I don't see any issues in disclosing it and I'm not suggesting there is any wrongdoing but it could be an issue if he doesn't.

I wonder if it's there for safety reasons, or if it's stop traffic getting backed up waiting to join the bigger road?

I'm presuming the car with the cam was following behind me as to be able to see my indicator on approach to the junction. I would not have hindered them as I would have arrived at the junction and immediately pulled off the move and not waited for a gap in traffic both ways so I would have been at the junction for the same amount of time pulling the move I did or if I had turned left anyway. Either way they would have been able to leave the junction at the same time, no delay for them.

99.9% no mobile camera as I don't think they are used in our area for anything anymore, certainly cant recall the last time I saw one. And I also cant think where it would have been parked to get a view of the offence as described. Nowhere sensible on the main road that I was turning onto, would have been half on grass verge and half on road and if on the road I was emerging from then the only spot they would park has the junction obscured by trees.

If you make a request, do not use the word 'evidence'

I'd just take it on the chin OP.

I got a TS20 for crossing a solid white line, notificed insurance and it has made no difference to my premiums.

I think it has always been no right turn. They put some new signs up last year and even a massive one above the sign across the junction but I this massive one has been taken down again.
A few dog walking friends I have spoken to also never realised it was a no right turn as they had just followed people in front of them too.

Exactly, it's 3 points and a fine OP, not worth writing home about. Don't try to justify what you did or wriggle out of it like some on here do as it's just embarrassing.

It wont show on DBS, but inform your employer (if you drive for work) and insurance and move on.

People on here bh and moan about millennials on a regular basis and yet here we have someone who’s at least 30 acting very wet and trying to blame others rather than accept the co sequences of his own actions.

You can’t hise behind “everyone else does it” as a defence, If anything that’s just an admission of guilt.

A FPN or even a trip to court isn’t anything that’s going to mess up a DBS check. I really do wonder how many use this line as if there’s some extra leniency that should be applied to them because of it.

You e done something sillly, now accept the minor consequences of it.

I'm 32. I'm not being wet, maybe naive. Just never had this happen before and was wondering what the impact could be and if there was any way to help the situation. I wasn't trying to hide behind anything and readily admit to the offence.

Could have been an off duty or plain clothes officer or police worker. Probably more likely than a MoP being so incensed by your turning right!

Possibly but there are endless dash cam videos on youtube of people showing and being enraged by people making naughty right turns so thought this was most likely.
