Completely different job?

Hi PHers.
Fairly long standing member here, haven't been on for a fair time and couldn't log in so have created a new profile to ask you merry lot for some advice, please.
Im in a position where I'm not enjoying my job any more, and now looking for new options. My current job was great at first, but a lot has changed and it's no where near as enjoyable - other employees are feeling the same.
I'm also at a stage in my life where I'm wanting more money (like everyone I guess) and have been graced with a possible opportunity somewhere a friend works. The thing is, it's a complete career jump. I'm in an office job at the moment (always have been), but this new job is in the gas industry as a first call operative. Luckily I'm still young enough to make a jump (mid twenties), but I'm worried about the vast change - but am also, in a strange way, finding the thought of change interesting/desirable.
The new job pays very well, my friend last year made £59k with a fair bit of overtime, so it would be a huge pay rise once training is complete. The chance at overtime is something I've never had either so is appealling in that way, too. My friend enjoys the job, he's always out and about, people are good etc. But my worry is he hasn't known anything different.
Has anyone made a similar jump? Any general advice?

A friend of mine works for JLR on the production line and he was saying he earns nearly £40k a year. Fair play to him, but it annoyed me as he was paid a lot more than me and I'm a developer.
Turns out he does a stack of overtime, his actually salary is nowhere near that.
