I’ve got a 2007 325i petrol (N52 engine) which has developed an intermittently (very) noisy tappet.

Research seems to indicate that this is a fairly common problem, although the specialist that looks after my car doesn’t agree and says he’s never come across it before. He’s not interested in fixing it either as he thinks it’s a massive job to replace the tappets.

Is there anything that can sensibly be done about it as I’m trying to sell the car and am sure this would put people off despite it driving really nicely. Or should I just list it as spares or repair?

Wynns hydraulic lifter oil treatment stops it for a couple of weeks but that’s not a fix.

It's not terminal just annoying

There is a procedure for resetting them do a Google. Something like run engine at 3000 rpm for 15 minutes and if that doesn't work try again.

Hi,

I've tried that procedure. It only fixes it temporarily. I certainly wouldn't buy a car making this racket so I'm worried no-one else will. I certainly wouldn't want to just hide it from a prospective buyer. It's also got the abs pump issue which I was going to have rebuilt prior to selling it but not sure there is any point now.

From what I've read online, this was a big problem with this engine and the only real fix was a new redesigned head, but that's obviously not an option on this car at this age. What amazes me is that if it was truly such a big problem, why have I never heard another BMW with this issue? My specialist is really not being helpful about it. His response was basically to live with it.

Depends how loud it is. I wouldn't hesitate in making it quiet enough to put through WBAC or any of the other car buying "services".

That is only one issue BMWs have; Almost all BMWs have flaws in one way or another!

It is quite loud. WBAC valuation is a joke and that's without declaring any issues!

Think I'll try listing it cheaply with the abs fault and tappet noise declared and see what happens.

Annoying as otherwise its in really good condition and drives really nicely.
