Petrol Cap

I left a jacket in my boot for a couple of days...when I took it out I could smell petrol on it

I had not filled up so it wasn't spillage but if I stick my shnozz close to the petrol cap there is a strong smell of petrol

Is this correct - I thought the cap should be a tight fit - perhaps I have the wrong cap - mine is plain black with no markings

Its TVR's boot light system. The idea is, as you have no bulb, you light a match in the boot, and the vapours make a nice big yellow glow.

It's spare fuel for when the needle reaches quarter full and you've run out of petrol.

Worth pulling out the cover panel above the tank, and checking the condition of the pipes around the filler neck + the seal on the cap.

Thanks - just checked the pipes/connections....they are all OK .....seal looks OK but will check with another Chim when I go to the dealer next week to check I have the right cap - mine is plain black with a code C 9 99 stamped on it by the seal

Hiya,

Only had my Chim for a week and its exactly the same. It had a new tank and sender unit fitted just over a year ago because the last owner suspected a fuel leak. Ive had all the boot trims out and it definatly is not leaking. I strongly suspect its my fuel cap as it only has a cork seal which after 12 years I should think is about as usefull as a choclate fire gaurd so im going to try a new cap as soon as I can. Im sure its a vapour leak rather than a fluid leak as its only every now and again it smells of fuel.

Bit of a pricey solution, but I can really recommend a Leven petrol cap. Looks the nuts, and cured the fuel vapour problem I had on mine.....
