Driving in the dark
Discussion
"I'm going to put the TVR away honey but I think I might go for a pootle around a bit first."
An hour later, freezing cold and grinning like an idiot I come back into the house.
I've always loved driving in the dark and with the roof down its such a fantastic experience.
Pootle along at 70mph and you can imagine you are part of the car. You can't see most of it, just the dash lights, but you can feel it around you. Its like you belong there.
Get into a town, woah, sensory overload.
Tonight for instance - Derby, 10pm, people everywhere moving from pub to pub when you rumble past at 30mph in top gear. God the Griffith sounds lovely at night, like a big cat it has that low, deep prowling purr until you prod it and it becomes a roaring snarl.
There's something about the dark that amplifies these sounds making every movement of your right foot a thrill.
Theres a piece of the one-way system I love in this town. Beginning at a set of traffic lights, two lanes 150mtrs long to a 90deg right hander, now a 300mtr run to where the lanes split and I go another 90deg to the left. So... Short sharp sprint and brake hard for the right turn and down to 2nd, through the corner and squeeze the throttle until 3000rpm, up to 3rd, for just 50mtrs when its time to brake, blip the throttle and drop back to 2nd again, ready for the left.
It all happens in the blink of an eye and the noise is phenomenal because of the high city buildings on both sides. It feels like Monaco and its as close as I'm ever going to get.
I'm home. No-one would believe this scruffy, falling down garage holds such thrills. My Griffith
