BMW E87 1 SERIES 2008 poor FM radio reception

Hi

I have a BMW E87 2008 118d. its never had great radio reception and when I bought the car five years ago some of the rear heater elements were broken but ive lived with it, though I could always get all the usual FM channels. I was under the impression the FM aerial was in the rear window glass heater elements?

I noticed in December 2017 during a very cold few days the radio stared to not pick up any FM channels and only Radio 1 ( which i listen to so not an issue) but sometimes it would be a bit washy I could no longer pickup any other stations.

I assumed it was the rear heater element so had the rear window replaced, The guy replacing the window noted before replacing that one of the diversity connections was not connected? which was strange so assumed that's why my radio had got poor reception.

He went ahead and fitted the new rear window and connected the cables. but the reception was still poor. So I have replaced the diversity unit with one from fleabay. still no different, I've now replaced the roof aerial again from fleabay and still no different...

I found when I disconnected the diversity unit the radio would drop out all together so know the diversity must be working.

It appears I have changed perfectly working diversity unit and roof aerial for no reason.

Any sensible advice please?
