How much oil???

Ive just done an oil filter change on my 87 350i. Now according to all the specs for refilling the oil the bible says 5lt the owner manual says just under 5lt and the Range Rover Haynes manual says 5lt for engine and 0.6lt for the oil filter. A little confused as I managed to get 6.25lt's in on the full mark on the dip stick. I checked it several times when filling and ran it up and even took it down the road but it still is just over the full mark. Am I going mad or is Doctor Who living in my sump????

The remote oil filter pipes might account for some of it but not much, do you have an oil cooler?

No oil cooler.Ive checked this morning from cold and its probably half a litre over but no way one and a half. Are you advised to check it hot or cold as I spun the engine up and it was just below max. I had a 4.0 Chimaera a few years ago and that held well over 6ltrs. Who's quantity is right???

My 400 takes over 6l, although it does have an oil cooler.

Over 5 l. So but 10 L fill up as required , have enough for top ups and probably enough for another refill when you buy the next 5l

That's what I did when I replaced the engine last year, but did 2 changes within a couple of weeks

I think I going to admit to overfilling so I will drain some off but I would imagine Im only going to loose half a litre to get it right. So there still lies the mystery of why is it listed as a 5ltr fill??? as Ive still put in about 6ltrs.
I think the different levels that Ive experianced are due to how much oil has drained back from the remote filter and housing and how long the motor has sat cooling and draining before re-checking the dip stick. Lesson learned!!!!

Mine's around 6 with a decent sized oil cooler but half a litre over is ok - in fact if you drive it hard it's not such a bad thing as it will stop loss of oil pressure if cornering hard without a shortened, baffled (dry) sump.

IIRC the 390SE (with remote filter and oil cooler) takes about 6L, plus or minus a bit.
I'd go by the dipstick, an extra half a litre spread about the place wouldn't be a problem.

Mine takes just over 6lt's with a big oil cooler fitted.
It may be worth checking that the dipstick tube is seated correctly as these can move fairly easily, giving a false reading.

Im pleased that someone else has put that much oil in a standard 350i as I thought I was going totaly Ga Ga. Or was it that I missed that large hole in the sump!!!!

My owners manual says 5.5 l but I am sure it is nearer 6 l, having just done it. As suggested earlier I buy two 5 ls and that gives me some spare for topups.

it took 12litres to fill the tuscan V8 !!!!!


although it does have a dry sump tank, 2 coolers and lots of pipe work !!!!
