Hi guys, wonder if anybody can help me....
have just bought a BMW 320i MSport 2008... a few days after it has started knocking, sounds as if it’s coming from the top of the engine. The car constantly knocks, when you rev the vehicle it becomes ALOT louder. Any advice would help.
Many thanks Lewis

The seller or a freindly mechami would surely be a better place to start?

I video would help or a sound file.

Usually its a tap noise from the top of the engine and most likely worn camshaft/hydraulic lifters

Have you checked the oil level?

Did you buy it from a dealer or privately?

I think you can check the tension of the timing chain on these by removing the oil cap. A common failure on these 4 cylinder cars I believe.

Hmmm . that's not a healthy sound

It doesn't sound like either hydraulic lifters or timing chain. As you say it's a knocking sound.

It's difficult to say and it could well be coming from the bottom end and being amplified by the plastic inlet manifold.

You need a garage to get a stethoscope on it and locate the source. I would do this as a matter of urgency

That sounds like a big end crankshaft bearing gone. This video shows what makes that sound when it breaks.

That's what I was intimating above but without trying to make the OP cry.

It does sound like it's crank related to me - big end or a spun rod bearing.

Was it definitely a private sale ? And not a sneaky dealer ? Any copies of the advert, phone numbers, description etc ?

Best to seem some legal advice in case you have some comeback on the seller...and do it fast. That's fked. Time for a new engine

The noise will be the stretched timing chain hitting the cam cover.

.. and the timing chain stretched massively immediately after the OP bought it?

Seems more likely to me that the seller knew the engine was already on the way out and filled it with thick oil / sawdust / whatever to keep it quiet for a few days.

I'd doubt it was the timing chain myself, particularly as it gets even louder when revving. With chain slap it's more prominent at idle or when slowing down after revving the engine.

My money is on the bottom end sadly.

I'd be highly surprise if the seller wasn't aware of this issue before selling, unless the OP has given it death since buying and maybe over revved it; stretching the head bolts
