Dentist Advice on Filling

First world problems and all that, but would appreciate any advice:

I recently went in for my first major filling, a month and a half ago.

It was a cavity on my back left hand side molar.

Apparently quite a deep one on the side and top of the tooth. probably quite close to the pulp, but thankfully they didn't go through the tooth to that etc.

I had a traditional metal filling as was told these are the strongest, and that is what they advise, would have happily paid more for a different type.

A young dentist did the filling with few periodic checks from the main Dental Partner.

I've been back once to get it checked as I've had some pain for longer than expected, and could barely get the floss in between the teeth, if at all.

They have said there is nothing wrong with it, but did offer to re do it, and naturally I decided to see how it goes, but it's still being a bit of a nuisance.

I would like to be able to drink normal tap water without wincing, it does seem so very sensitive.

Is that unrealistic?

I wondered whether any other type of filling would conduct the hot and cold less than the metal one?? be less sensitive etc?

And how would they remove the old filling? Grind it out again and just mix up some more?

I've been trying to trust this dentist, but it was the first time I went there and not sure whether I should be getting a second opinion as to whether they did a good job and gave the right advice....

I was almost thinking of just going somewhere else?

Hard to tell as its my first filling except for a minute white surface one a few years ago.
