You might remember me posting this:

Clutch failure.

Turns out I have broken fingers, usual story.

But here's the thing. After doing some detailed digging into the car's history I have found that although the clutch was replaced only a few thousand miles ago, it was replaced with a second hand unit that already had 5000 miles on it. What's more, there was a report of a repair to the bell housing which, after some independent pressure tesing, turns out to be fractured.

So not only do I need a new clutch but also a new bell housing. Thank Jeeebus for warranties

Now I'm not a techie but do those that do have any opinions on this? Could a fractured bell housing contribute to a failed clutch? It doesn't sound sensible to me to install a second hand clutch but am I just being overfussy?

I had a problem with my bell housing once. I went to see a doctor and he whipped my foreskin off.....but that may be a different bell housing come to think of it

To me it sounds like the clutch disc's, pressure plate and trans input shaft were not aligned properly when the last clutch was installed.

When the bell housing was then tightened down the mis-alignment caused it to crack.(just my best guess).

Make sure that before the new clutch is installed that the trans input shaft is checked to see that there are no burrs Etc that would keep the clutch disk from sliding on the input shaft.

That a clutch disk alignment tool is used and the pressure plate is torqued using a star pattern so no warp-age of the pressure plate occurs during installation.

Hope this is helpful, Trooper2.

Well Angus, you have my sympathies. Think I'm heading down the same road as you now. The release bearing was apparently replaced on my Cerb in Jan, yet now it is squealing unless I apply light pressure to the clutch pedal. Still, we can rebuild her!

Steve.
