Hi,
I'm bored of thinking about the problems with my 350i, so I have started thinking ahead to the respray I'll get when its finally mechanically sound. As it seems like it will be some time before that happens, I was wondering what the best paint job anybody has seen on a wedge?
I love the two/three tone reflex paint on the newer curvier models, has anyone done anything like that on a wedge? I have a feeling the angular shape is less suitable for that kind of thing. My car is currently a tasteful dark blue, but I always fancied a yellow car. Oh I don't know, maybe I'll just gold leaf the thing. Any suggestions/ideas/experiences regarding re-sprays welcome.

Had my Tasmin done in Ferrari Rosso Pearl. Waste of 300 quid (just for the paint!). You could only see the effect really well on a couple of curves around the rear side windows and when the sun was bright, or under electric lights like on a garage forecourt. Most of the time it just looked burgundy.
You're correct in saying the pearlescents only work well on curvy cars, where the light diffracts through the paint better.
IMHO, white or cream aren't good colours for a Wedge, nor is silver although I know some will disagree... and my car is silver!
According to the Practical Classics buying guide, grey is also out but I think a dark metallic gunmetal would look OK as does black, although it shows the slightest imperfection up.
You need a colour that doesn't make it look like a plastic car, and a lot of colours do just that.

Reflex paints are prohibitive, the reflex purple colour on the speed 12 motorshow car was over £500 per litre !!! I have seen a relex paint job done on an XR2 which had very original "chaemaeleon" graphix on it. Yep it changed colour (just) but looked completely crap as the paintwork had no "depth" to it. More to the fact that he was trying to make a small amount of paint go as far as possible !!!

The secret of a good paint job is in the preparation and that takes time which adds to the cost. If you are in no hurry to do the bodywork use the time to look at other cars and the paint colours at car shows and make your move from there.

Good luck

Used to pass a Nissan Micra with a Purple/Gold reflex paint job. Can you think of a bigger waste of money?
