2013 525d to 2017 520d. Would it feel like a downgrade?
Discussion
I have a 2013 525d with the 2.0 engine.
I really want a 530d, but I cant find one of the same shape which matches my spec. Basically, they're all M Sport, and I hate M Sport. The Luxury/SE models I can find are of mileage or age which is too high for me, or the spec isn't right. I found 1 for the first time in 3 months the other day, and the dealer sold it within an hour of me talking to them about it. I've penned in to look at an immaculate 8000 miles '66 M Sport Touring, but i just know I wont want it because I hate the M sport wheels and I fear the ride will be solid.
I adore the new 2017 model, but the 530d is well out of my price range (starting at 31,000 used).
However, the 520d is a much more manageable 26,000 used as a starting price.
Would it feel like a downgrade to go to that 520? Or should I just do the man maths and decide to blast all sense out of the water and just go and lump money at the 530 anyway?
On an unrelated note, saloon or touring? If you are the only person who drives it, with no pets or family, is a touring a stupid idea?

I have a M3 that’s bloody firm
But my runabout is a M Sport X1 but it’s on 18s with non RFTs and has adaptive suspension. I find it very comfortable and my passengers who are used to SEs or Mercedes with non sport options are happy.
Would those tire / suspension options help you with a M Sport ?
I’d stick with six cylinder, I’m only getting a 5p a mile saving with the X1 20d X drive compared to my previous runabout a 2002 325i ; so surely a 530 is manageable
Life’s what happens to us , when we’re msking plans or something like that. What’s to say , even if you don’t need a touring now you might in the foreseeable. Doesn’t have to be a family thing , could be a new interest needing equipment some new friends with bikes to carry for them when it’s wet. If you prefer the style go for it. I don’t think it’s exclusively a family or pet flavoured vehicle same as the saloon isn’t exclusibely a car for excecs.

Well nothing wrong with a Touring for one person IMO. I had a 325ti Compact until last month when I replaced it with an E91 325iSE.
My cars only usually ever carry 1 person, but as I seem to keep buying wheels with winter or summer tyres on the Touring works much better than the Compact did!
And FWIW my E91 rides much better on 16" run-flats than my E46 did on non-RFTs.
So you currently have an N47 2.0 525D, and would be replacing it with a B47 2.0?
Many of the reports regardless of F10/11 - G30/31 have seen the B47's MPG about 4-5 MPG lower than the N47.
Problem with that is for many it starts to make it closer to the 6 pot engines.
I personally would hold out for a 6 pot B57 in this case.
Oh and the changes between the timing chains on the N47 and B47, well they share many of the same components from the final version of the N47, even down to the same part numbers
. Although the same sort of goes for the N57 and B57 as well.
