Fistula in ano.
Discussion
After the good advice I got before, I need to turn to you guys again.
You may remember that I had 4 pilonidal sinus operations over the Christmas period, as it kept refilling. The doctor has now decided this is a fistula in ano, and the last thing we want it to do is close over.
For those that don't know, it's effectively the same as a pilonidal sinus, but constantly discharging. It is painful, unhygienic, smelly, and nasty to live with.
The consultant wants me checked for Crohn's, and has booked a colonoscopy, and MRI. He also says I may need something called a Seton, to try and sort the fistula.
Unfortunately he was running late for my appointment, and rushed things a little, so I'm confused about certain things, and only have the follow up letter, and Googling to go on.
If anyone has any advice to go on it would be well received. I still can't sit on my left buttock, have to use an L shaped cushion to drive, to lift that cheek off the seat, and have sold my motorbike, as it was sitting outside unused, as trying to ride was impossible.
The doctor also said to try and massage my bottom, to try and express the discharge, but never said how, or best method.
The pain is normally manageable, but every so often a shooting pain goes through as it discharges, and it's enough to drive me to crying.

Hi, sorry to read of your problem.I went through the same agony three years ago.It is difficult to sit for long periods apart from the 'discharge' embarrasing problem.
My GP was very good and referred me to a specialist who operated by opening up the 'channel',draining it and leaving it to heal naturally, which it did.
Whilst my surgeon was 'inside' he also sorted three internal piles,so I got good value for money, although at the time it felt as though he and the nurses had had a party in my rear!
I was given a very informative leaflet by BMI Healthcare, called 'CR11 Surgery for Anal Fistula.'
This sets out in simple terms, with diagrams, all you need to know about this painfull problem.
I understand that the leaflet is accessible on line at www.aboutmyhealth.org. and quoting ref CR 11.
Hope this helps and all the best.
