Given the choice which one would you go for?

EP2 2001-2005 Civic 3 door 1.6 Type S

Power 108 bhp
0-60 mph 10.1 secs
Torque 111 ft-lb
Top Speed 115 mph

FN1 2005–2011 Civic 3 door 1.8 type S

Max power 138bhp
Max torque 128lb ft-lb
0-60 8.9sec
Top Speed 130 mph

The prices are not too different, I much prefer the looks of the ep2 Civic but have no experience driving either.
Would be as a run around, something reliable, no hassle.
Fuel consumption is about the same as well.

Just after any information really, issues, reasons not to bother with either!

The type S was a 5 door was it not??

Engine utterly different from the EP2 - even fitted the other way round.

For me, go for the S as it's quicker and looks boring. With the EP2 looking like a type R but without the go, it depends on what you prefer, style or substance.
My lad had 2 EP2's and he loved them, but he is a style animal. Try as he might, he couldn't get them less than 40mpg. Would cruise happily at 70, although not entirely quietly. Handle pretty well. Only thing that went wrong was a heater resistor.

I think they do a Type S 2001-2005 civic in a 5 door but it's the 2.0 engine.
Type s in 3 door is the 1.6 (I think)

40mpg is really good when compared to the equivalent Clio which is quoted at 30mpg (1.6 vvt)
I did read that the 1.6 vtec in the 01-05 Honda wasn't really vtec and tuned for economy.

I just want something to be reliable and not too under powered, build up some no claims and get something a bit more fun later down the line.
