Hello,

Finally got my Cerbera back on the road after its crank snapped (luckily on a track), so replacement engine in and I'm taking it easy for a while and being extra paranoid about weird noises. I didn't notice anything strange on the 40 mile drive back, but I did have the window open on a sunny warm day and enjoying the glorious sounds. Now the weather is much colder, and I'm driving around town quietly with the windows closed I'm noticing a bump bump bump noise that is speed not revs related. My first thoughts are that it could be flat spots (same tyres as when the crank let go and wheels locked whilst doing 90mph). or the fact it has been sat without moving for almost 2 years and I would imagine not been on axle stands for 18 months of that. It certainly feels like it's coming from the rear, and is just perceptible like it could be tyres. Do flat spots make that much difference or am I just being hopeful and it is something more expensive...

Cheers

Joe

In the circumstances, I would certainly start by checking the tyres. Raise the back of the car and simply run your hands around the tread; if you have a flat spot sufficient to cause that noise, it should be sufficient to feel this way.

If you locked the rears at that speed it could be the issue.

I had a big lock up of the rears on my 350i and gave each rear tyre a flat spot down to the canvas. That was, err, very noticeable, for the very very short amount of time that I continued to drive on them.

Hopefully you'll be able to swap your rear wheels with another Cerb owner to check whether they are indeed the culprits

I had a noise like this develop from nowhere. Turned out to be the rear pads rattling in the calipers. Solutions was to fit anti rattle plates instead of just pins and springs.

I thought about the pads but the noise stays the same under braking. The tyres are on their way out anyway with not a great deal of tread left, but I can feel a definite area where the tread is less. I did have a spare set of Spiders with ok tyres on them that I could swap, but left them at a mechanics some years ago when I had the original wheels put back on - I knew I should have kept hold of them....

Maybe it's time for some new tyres anyway, they have seen their fair share of action on and off track. I might start with renewing the rears and see if that cures the noise. It's just strange that I only started noticing it after about 50 miles of driving

Cheers
