Dear all

We are looking at buying an NA R56 1.4 (N12) or 1.6 (N16) Mini One around 2007. However having read the horror stories about gearboxes and timing chains we are wondering if we should get a late R53 instead.

Comments & advice welcomed

I'd say no as the R53 feels properly ancient now and you'll be paying over the odds for it.

Probably best to buy an R56 privately. Try and find one with a decent service history and possibly evidence that it's already had the timing chain replaced.

Thanks a quick google suggests the R56 is a far better built car overall.

The r53 is supercharged, are you sure you aren't on about the r50?

Im pretty sure the R53 was offered as a 1.6 NA and a supercharged version. I believe the R53 replaced the R50 with a slight face lift but essentially the same car.

Whoops sorry I was wrong I meant R50 or R56.

A Mini One R56 will be the better car, by the best you can.
