Audi B6 S4 Automatic Gearbox Problem
Discussion
HELP !!!
I have a '04 Audi S4 4.2 V8 Quattro withe the 6 speed automatic gearbox and 125k miles on it that doesn't work well anymore.
About 4 month ago the gearbox started to shift a bit more abrupt when cold. I didn't pay to much attention to it at first.
Once it was warmed up it was absolutely fine. Then it got a bit worse, but still very drivable. Especially when it shifted at high rpm.
I went to Germany with it and it performed flawlessly! Only occasionally when reversing from cold, the gearbox went in safe mode. Once you stoped and restarted the engine it was fine again. So I changed the gearbox oil myself.
I used one of these sets rom Vaico along with 7l ATF 8HP gearbox oil. I performed the exact procedure according to ZF for this 6HP19 gearbox.
Once done, the joy was great, as the car performed better than when I got it 25k miles earlier.
For a month or so everything was alright, but then the symptoms came back.
Only this time slightly different. When cold, the first few minutes the car sometimes don't want to engage the clutch. The rpms rise, but the gearbox doesn't seem to want to do anything and eventually safe mode kicks in (PRND is lit red in the FIS). Again, once you restart it is fine. Also when properly warm, everything is fine with really smooth gear changes!!
Has anybody encountered something similar?? I went to one gearbox specialist near me, and they where not very helpful. Turned out to be a garage run by a couple eastern european guys (no problem there) who the first time where not around, although I called in advance. The second time the where there and first plugged in an cheap OBDII reader and because they didnt' find anything, an old laptop. The found "Übersetzngsfehler Rückwärtgetriebe" with which they didn't know what to do. The followed a long discussion in albanian with me standing next to them.
They said to take the gearbox apart and then they can see whats wrong with it and fix it. At minimum 2.5k £ + VAT, but potentially more expensive, once the gearbox is in pieces next to the car. Yeah right....
Anybody who had a similar problem??

What fault codes does VCDS produce?
If the first oil and filter change wasn't done till quite recently it may be that any underlying gearbox issue has only been delayed, rather than dealt with.
Changing the oil requires VCDS, or similar, to monitor the gearbox oil temperature so you get the level right, so it's possible the level is not correct. It takes about 5 hours for the gearbox oil to cool down enough after driving before you can even think about checking the level.
It doesn't sound like an F125 range control sensor fault, unless the symptoms are only present when the PRDNS is all lit up in red, in which case it could just be the fact it's not happy pulling away in 3rd, which is the gear it will lock itself into. If it is that it'll show up clear as day with a scan and will cost less than £300 to fix.
At the mileage you are at with the gearbox it is 'possible' it needs a rebuild, absent previous gearbox oil changes. Whereabouts are you based, in case someone can offer to scan it for you?
