Does anybody know the reason why I've not been able to trace a letter using the above service? I put in the reference number and it comes up "The system is currently unable to confirm the status of your item. Please try again later". I've been checking since Friday and the message never changes.

The item of post was posted last Wednesday and is quite urgent, hence why it was tracked.

My theory is that Royal Mail have such a enormous backlog as a result of the snow a few weeks ago that they have taken the system down as they don't really have a clue where an item of post is!!

Where is it coming From ? I have regular deliveries from hong kong and that is the status i see until the package reaches the uk and enters the royal mail parcel handling infrastructure.

I would say that the package is sat somewhere and hasnt yet been scanned in to the system .

The item is coming from my OH's workplace which is about 5 miles from where we live!!

As you say, I suspect the letter is sitting somewhere waiting to be scanned.

I had this recently - same message right up the point when it was delivered 4 days late.

I had this too recently, due to the bad weather - still got a signature on receipt though. Should be OK.

I had the same as well on something sent from China and picked up at the border control by Royal Mail.

It stayed the same for 7mths, was deemed lost in transit by Royal Mail after 3mths and then turned up randomly - and THEN changed to delivered - very odd indeed!
