Best mate's 40th approaching and want to get him a suitable gift. Looking for pointers? Anyone?

Known the guy 30 or so years, was best man at wedding etc. Lots of memories.

Some experience that generates an unforgettable, preferably great memory for you both. So in 30 years time when you’re both 70 you’ll talk about when you went... for his 40th.

Like the port idea, and the experience idea - had been thinking toward the latter I must say.

Budget is flexible. Hadn't really contemplated budget but was more to give an idea in response to the first questions (justified). Cheapskate perhaps, didn't really enter my mind to be honest. Attending his wedding last year was a £3k cost for the day so don't feel like I have been a massively tight coont - equally I don't want to spend a level of dosh that makes his family thinks I have some romantic obsession. Our birthdays until now have involved buying each other a pint and giving a solid pat on the back.

For my 40th my best mate (who was 40 three days later) and I took ourselves off to Portugal to watch the WRC, no actual present was given but we both enjoyed the week and it felt like a good way to mark turning 40 which otherwise went unnoticed by family and other friends.

Got a mate in similar circumstances an engraved Leatherman tool. Not sure he's ever used it though!
