Guys, what's the general consensus on contributing to collections in the office?

It seems constant in my place! The most recent one being for one of our global executives, who has resigned. Now, given he has resigned leads me to the fact it's his own doing, so why buy him a present, he's deserting us! Also, he's on well into 6 figures, so does he really need some shi**y little gift that someone is going to pick up for him in Debenhams?

If it was for a retirement, new baby, long term absentee with a serious illness, or someone being paid off I would not hesitate to stick a tenner in, but for a chief exec on serious cash, who has resigned? Is it just me!? Lol

If I don't know said person on at least a "stop for a chat in the corridor" etc then I just pass the envelope on.

Does my sweede in.

I’ll be honest I thought I had seen it all when it comes to staff begging having worked at CRUK but in my current office, they print a list of employees, stick it to the front of the collection envelope and expect you to tick your name off once you have “signed” and “paid”.

Now I ignore them.

I’ve worked in places with that list ... tick the box, flick the envelope and pass it on

(The flick replicates the sounds of coins being dropped in)

I get fed up with the constant charity ones; so and so is giving up chocolate/booze/growing a moustache/running a 10k.......

I just bin the email.

As for leavers, fortunately we are a small company so not many employees and rarely do people leave.

Our company buys all the presents/cards/cake, lovely. Previously, I used to just pass on it. Worked out well as I never got anything from any of them!

Sound like I am not alone in my thoughts! That's reassuring!

The exec in question's understudy, sent a group email this morning reminding us 'kindly' that as it is pay day, to remember to contribute! The cheeky ba****d!

I replied asking if he was insinuating that folk don't have money any other time of the month!

Another thing that annoys me is weddings; a few years ago a member of staff got married so a whip round was organised and a card went round, I got fk all from them when I got married, not even a card!

40th birthday our admin lady; who is a witch, was taken out by the MD and sales director for lunch, for my 40th I didn't even get a happy birthday!

Is there a suggested/expected amount, what amount is normally given?

My last role was as an interim IT Director for a finance company in Manchester and I was expected to contribute generously to every collection as I was a senior exec.

When I left I didn't even get a company mug.

Agree very much with all this, started at a place late last year and Boss's son going travelling. An envelope was passed round, only been here a couple month! Then it was someone's birthday, again an envelope.

I think the issue is I hate tat, which is what's usually bought with the funds.

Actually while we are on it, I think these work night outs are daft. I agree, one every now and again is alright but these people honestly go out minimum once a month and expect everyone to attend.
I see these people 40 hrs + a week, that's plenty for me.

I too have the list of names attached to the envelope situation.

Definitely a female thing. Can't imagine an all-male office doing this st.

Worked in one office where there were two or three a week, got ridiculous and for stupid things, envelopes went around for people you didnt even know. Even carried on when one person removed money, they claimed that they had put a note in and took change. They were found out when the money was counted before it went to them.

Next place these things were banned, nobody felt guilty or missed the donations, if you wanted to do something privately it was your own call, better for all concerned.

If you don't know the person or don't want to contribute just pass it on. If you do and want to contribute to a gift, contribute to a gift. Not sure why everyone is finding this so hard... confused

If nobody has ever done one for you, then perhaps it's because you're a miserable and quite rightly nobody likes you laugh
