I have a 123 account with Santander.

It gives "cash-back" on certain direct debits. Council tax, utility bills, phone bills, etc.

Does this money attract tax at all please?

After all it's not "interest" it's my post tax money being returned to me?

I looked into this a while back and the general consensus is no they are not taxable. Seems a bit of a grey area though.

What's the difference between "Cash back" and "interest"?

What is the criteria for receiving "cash back"?

I read that it was viewed as a deferred discount on the original purchase, so not an income, but yes a grey area, although I think HMRC made a direct statement at some time.
