What do you make of this, chivalry ?
Discussion
My wife showed me this photo on Facebook, she asked me if I knew why it was wrong, I said because the bloke is on the inside and the lady is nearer the road, thus exposed to more danger.

She seemed happy with my answer and I should have left it, but why should the man be exposed to more danger by default,if a car mounts the pavement and clips him he is no better able to take a hit from a moving vehicle because he is slightly taller and a percentage stronger. She didnt like it when I questioned it.
I would indeed walk on the right or suggest single file if I thought it was that dangerous, but with all the stuff about equality and the like, which I fully support but why is it assumed we, by default should take more risk and if we question it we get called out on it ?

That's not actually the reason for it being the "correct" chivalrous way to walk. She seemed happy with my answer and I should have left it, but why should the man be exposed to more danger by default,if a car mounts the pavement and clips him he is no better able to take a hit from a moving vehicle because he is slightly taller and a percentage stronger.
Back in the middle ages, before inside plumbing, people used to empty their night-soil pots* out of the window. The person nearer the building was less likely to be hit, because of the trajectory.
* - yes, this is what you think it is.
This is... less relevant today.
B'sides, in the massively unlikely situation where a car comes tonking down the pavement, neither side is safer.

Perhaps a better question is why she's hanging around football pages on FB.Nanook said:
I mean, I thought this was the reason, but surely he walks on the right, so his sword hand is free?
How do we know the guy in the pic isn't left-handed? Hmm?I mean, back in the day, a cack-hander would have been drowned at birth for witchcraft, so it was less of an issue back then, but...
