As per the title, i’m looking at my 1st boxster on Thursday morning. After reading lots of threads on here and on t’inernet i’ve found what looks to be a nice spec 3.4S PDK from 2010 with approx 60,000miles.

It has a full service history and 4 owners - MOT history checks out and is HPI clear as well as its at a dealer.

Apart from the usual checks for a 2nd hand car, is there anything specifically 987 I should be looking for?

Have also been looking at Bentley GT’s but so far been underwhelmed by the quality/condition - also have the 911cab on the list but would be a late 996 so then into risk of IMS/engine problems

  • Make sure the aircon works (otherwise that can be expensive)
  • No "dribbling" from the front radiators that are prone to rotting.
  • Usual caveats of clonks, squeaks, rattles and tyre wear.
  • There should be no smoke from the exhaust when hot (oil / air separator being full or blocked is often the culprit but it's a scary sight).
  • The engine should pull smoothly throughout the rev range - or its varioram / coil packs are on the blink
  • No ridges or excessive corrosion on the inside of the brake discs - otherwise they're for the bin.

service history, service history and service history. If there's no recent receipt and not been serviced in the last year, walk away.
gen 1 or gen 2? values dramatically different between those two.
gen 2 has fixed ims, fixed rms, decent satnav, dfi engine, and gen 1 hasn't - hence huge price difference.
check brake discs for lips and corrosion, pads, roof interior wear (check realistic - have seen a few that aren't)
also worth checking front and rear body and under sills for wear/chips - the last one I saw had an immaculate front plastic bumper, and stone chips on bonnet, sills and even on rear bumper... not a good sign. Walked away from that one.

Saw the car, drove the car, really liked it.

Dealer is saying they will replace the discs and pads, new condenser and ac recharge, re-tension the roof and put a full mot on it and a 3 month parts and labour warranty from themselves (Porsche specialist)

But - they won’t budge on the asking price of 22k

It had extended leather which I had missed in the photos, the service history is full - 2x Porsche main dealer followed by 2 independent garages and then a return to Porsche Bristol about 3,000 miles ago.

Never paid full asking before so need to make my mind up - sensible head says it’s going to be fully sorted and potentially nothing to pay for a while, the stupid head says stick it out for a discount and maybe lose the car to another buyer

The discount could be the new discs and pads plus condenser rad. That’s over £1k of work ?

Congrats fella. I have the 2010 Cayman S3.4 and it is brilliant! If you don't have the flappy paddle steering wheel then I'd suggest considering it. As a retro-fit it is, I believe, around £900 plus VAT in an OPC. It makes use of the PDK a sheer joy.

Enjoy!

Given the sheer amount of work and the parts cost - I don't think that's too bad. New brakes feel and stop so much better too! smile Let's face it - would you rather have had a discount, but shed loads of work to do straight away? Their labour cost will be a fraction of what you'd have to pay .......

Got an update from the dealer today - when they went to fit the new rear brakes, the handbrake assembly fell off, so that has now been replaced as well.

Off for an MOT tomorrow so all being good I can collect next week. Should be fully sorted when I get it ☺️
