Golf GTI Mk6 Timing Chain gone
Discussion
Hi all,
Fairly new to PistonHeads.
I need help with an issue with my Golf.
I have a Mk6 Golf GTI. I am not trying to sell on here, I am just trying to get advice.
Unfortunately, the timing chain has gone, and my mechanic thinks its a big job which could be between £1000 to £2000. I've had it listed for a week or so for sale, on eBay, but have not received the offers I would like for it.
There is 129000 miles on the clock. It comes with Sports steering wheel with flappy paddles, Full letter interior in good condition, with heated seats, and I have added black 18" BBS it's been professionally lowered, I've fitted a Pioneer SPH-DA120 Car Stereo and Mk6 R taillights.
What do you guys think realistically I could get for this? I think before the chain went I could have got around £7500? So feel I should be getting about £5000 for it now. Or do you guys think I should just get it fixed and then sell?
Thanks
Josh

Bad luck on the timing chain letting go but I feel 5k is too much to be asking, it maybe a 7.5k car when all is good with it but you need to tempt someone with a good price to part with some hard earned cash for it & 5k isn’t really a tempter, 2k could be spent on it & it could still need more spent on it, it could easily turn into a money pit. As it stands it’s a non runner so imo around 3k someone might take it,

Thanks for the replies. Yes I had considered fixing and then selling. Have had an offer of £4500 so far. Maybe should have taken that offer.
Personally I would have taken the £4500, because you cannot be sure how much damage the timing chain has done and at what cost for the repair (those little hidden extra's can be costly)! It could be a lot worse than you imagined, plus you can't be sure in today's used car market what your car might fetch. Best of luck with which ever route you take.
WBAC would only give you £4k in running condition, so privately I'd say £5k fixed is as good as it'd get. Given it doesn't run you can probably halve that from anyone with an awareness of the potential bills to repair. Problem is nobody will buy to fix for profit as it's not exactly low miles or rare, which limits its appeal.
If you get another similar offer, as above I'd bite their hand off. Far better to get rid if you can get more money for it than to find the repairs cost twice the price you expect and if you then sell you'll probably not get as much back as you'd hope.
