Traveled through one of the Mersey tunnels today and asked for a receipt.

The response is we don't issue receipts.

This quite surprised me, as I don't think I have ever been refused a receipt before. I contemplated a discussion that I don't pay without a receipt, but he already had my £1.70, so I think I was on a loser with that...

What are the rules? Is this actually a legal policy?

It will be interesting to see what our accounts department make of my out of policy claim....

I'm sure they'll trust you...

There's no VAT - no idea why, it's charged on the M6 Toll - and certainly my previous employers were only bothered about having VAT receipts.

Don't know if it's changed but you didn't used to pay a human anyway, all they do is give you coins to put in the basket. Baffled me for a moment as I thought he'd taken the fee and given me the change.

Having grown up around Liverpool with family who still live in the city I am well placed to ask the question........................

It’s definitely their policy - for business use they suggest you get an electronic tag but that’s stupid for occasional users.

No idea if it’s actually legal but knowing scousers I can’t imagine someone hasn’t tried to challenge it just to “cut them down to size, I know my rights, who do they think they are” wink

I had similar at Birmingham airport for the baggage trolleys. Eventually I got a reciept (have written and scanned) which I thought was especially dodgy since they charged different amounts for cash or card payments.
