Hi all,

We own a 2011 VW golf 2L TDI and the other day the engine management light came on and flashed for a while and whist this light was flashing the car felt like it was in limp mode and lost power.

Once the car was restarted the and the light went off all was well again, until the next time this happened and it flashed and lost power.

Got this checked at the local garage that services the car and it came with an EGR issue code, does anyone know what this means and what the problem is as they aren't sure. Any information would be great.

Just to let you know the light is not on at the moment.

Thanks

Bing.

i had the same egr issue on my adui 2.0 a6. The EGR had to be replaced, as it clogs up with carbon/soot. £700 as I recall. It was VW cheap fix for emissions standards. The problem with the EGR was that there is a plastic cog and plastic teeth, which just wore away, not allowing a valve to open properly, hence the clogging up.

If the car has had the Emissions Recall carried out within the last two years the EGR will be covered free of charge by VW.

More info here:

Unfortunately it’s a common problem with Diesels, not just vw. My 1.6TDI went and was about £700 to put right.

Yep, common problem and expensive for labour as it's down the back of the engine and involves a load of parts removal to access it.....

As above, if you've had 'the fix' for the cheating map then it should be covered under goodwill

The EGR valve on a 2011 golf 2.0 tdi is on the front of the engine, on the intake manifold. It takes 30 minutes to change.

When does it move to the back? Am sure they become harder work at some point....

Not sure

The EGR cooler is round the back of the block. Still not massively hard to remove.

It might be the cooler I'm thinking of, if they're separate parts. I recall visiting my indy who is ex-VW and was just finishing one off - was cursing the stupid location

Thanks guys, I think my call has not had the emissions update. Does this mean it's a £700+ job?

Why £700?
You can buy a whole engine for that.... lol.

Go on to Ebay and buy a used EGR, clean it before fitting, problem solved.

Some are EGR's that are easy to access, some are EGR coolers combined that are hidden at the back the engine, of left it can cause other issues such as the DPF not regnerating.

Considered getting an egr delete done?
We had our old A3 done after a few issues and also when I saw its location!
Any remapper can do this, does not boost power just removes the egr operation in the software and should cost less than £300.

a Fault with the EGR and a fault with the EGR cooler are two very different things.
As I said, EGR is on the front of the engine, can be swapped easily.
EGR cooler pipe is around the back, bit of a pain but not to bad, couple of hours labour.

Irrespective using a brain and the internet you can get it sorted for less than a couple of hunned.

I think it’s the 1.6tdi that has the EGR on top of/above the front subframe

My friend had a troublesome caddy 2010 ish age with that little scamper that had to be replaced I think it was approx £900 all in
