Weird Speedo Issue

My speedo sometimes doesn't work basically the needle does not move but the odometer still ticks over the mile count so I cant see this being a pick up issue. The strange thing though is that it only sometimes doesn't work and if its not working it will stay not working until the ignition is switched off and the car is restarted. Also if it is working it will never stop working again until the ignition it turned off and back on again. You can give it a good tap and nothing will change (if its not working the needle will bounce a bit with the vibration so its not just sticking) so I cant see this just being a loose connection but I guess anything is possible.
Does anyone have experience of these speedometers and can point me in the right direction I can see that they are a bit of a pain to open up as the front bezel is crimped on but that shouldn't be a problem.

I have a spare speedo that is for sale.
If you are interested you could try it in your car before parting with readies.

Many thanks for the kind offer I do have a spare but it has the wrong colour dial and that works fine. I will pull them apart and see if I can get one good one with the right colour dial.
