Hi Guys,

I recently tried to replace the 2x u-joints in the steering column of my car. The steering had a little play, so I thought this would be a good way to go rather than buy a new column which is crazy expensive ($800!).

I got some ST1540 u-joints from AliExpress.

I cut out the old ones, filed down the 'peened' over bits that hold the caps in, then fitted the new ones and hammered in some new peened lugs or whatever you call them. Seemed like it all went well (see photos) but I now have more steering play them before!!! AHHHH!!

I'm wondering if these type of u-joints in steering columns need to be pre-loaded in some way when pressed in to the column, or have I just got crap u-joints from China? Advice?

Anybody tried the Febest steering joints?

If the joints are anything like what's available in the BL world it's very tricky to get good quality UJs! Even GKN joints come in varying qualities now, which really spices things up!

If it were me, I'd be tempted to look at a secondhand replacement column from another car. It sounds like the UJs are staked, which only a half decent machine can change with ease.

Thanks for your reply. I didn't know these were called stacked joints. I've now been able to find some videos showing installation to help guide me.

I also noticed that the old parts were 100% metal while the new ones have a plastic shim in the end cap. I think they are just crap joints.

I'll get the Febest ones which are all metal and give it another shot with more info on install method.
