So I've been on the hunt for something cheap and with a better turn of pace than my Bora TDI 130. I only do around 6000 miles a year and a diesel is really not needed. The Bora was perfectly fine but as the name nearly suggests it was very boring!
I was originally looking at Z4's but began to think the lack of rear seats would eventually become a problem. I see the TT as a compromise as you can still fit children in the back or very tiny adults
I found this on a forum. Its high mileage at 150000 but the previous owner has evidence of changing the oil every 5000 miles! I can just tell its been looked after. I tend to buy on condition rather than mileage anyway.
There were a few issues with the car when I first bought it so I had them sorted at a local audi specialist in Loughborough (Sline garage, I highly recommend them. I sometimes think its hard nowadays to find somewhere to take your car without feeling like you may get ripped off but these guys seem honest!)
Its had a new genuine thermostat fitted as it was running cool and overfueling. I got about 50 miles from £15 of fuel on the drive home after buying it! The garage also found a split in a pipe (something to do with the turbo). When I first bought the car if you used full throttle there was a bit of a delay and then the turbo came in. Now it pulls hard straight away. They also fitted a new oil pressure sensor as I was getting a warning message. The engine was tested for oil pressure and it was fine. I spoke to the garage about remapping it but after speaking to the owner of the garage he said he took it out for a test drive after fitting the new bits and it pulls as hard as his remapped 225 so I will leave this for now!
I love the little touches like the fuel cap and the silver flap that comes down over the stereo. The heated seats are amazing! I think its strange to think that this car is 18 years old now. The design is still fresh and the car gets a lot of admiring glances. I've had plenty of hairdresser jokes from my colleagues and friends.
It drives great and after the Bora the handling feels good. I would say its a quick car! Feels quicker than my old 330ci Sport I had before the Bora.
Im planning on getting the wheels refurbed and also need to check if they are genuine or replicas as they are the wheels from the sport version. Then Il just enjoy it and hopefully it will last me a little while.

I wouldn't worry about the mileage, when I sold my mk1 it had around 165k on the clock and still pulled well and never gave me a problem in my ownership.
There are a couple of good mk1 groups on FB if you use it, plenty of knowledgeable guys and girls on there.
Yeah you get the "hairdresser" comments, mainly from people who admire Clarkson and haven't actually driven one. They're a brilliant car thats quick enough for the road and does everything well, apart from carry passengers
If they are genuine QS wheels they can. Be worth up to a grand, even replicas are worth half that.

TT QS wheels are desirable, I have a genuine set on mine, and the arm rest which is also sought after and worth £250.
However, the rest of mine has had its issue, they are old and complex, and as such prone to agro, plus points are that they arent that prone to rust and the interior lasts very well.
I have been toying with the idea of changing for something newer but I do like it, going to give it some love over the summer.

What isnt known by the owners on that forum isnt worth knowing.
I am still amazed how cheap they are, I think the sheer number still about and the fact its in that awkward old, not quite classic realm for a lot of people, not helped by the not a drivers car/hairdresser stuff, which is a shame as though it isnt the sharpest as a sports car, it is a well built, practical, reasonably quick and good looking (to my eyes) coupe.
Dont want to piss on any bonfires I dont think the wheels are genuine, if you look at WJB's car and how the rears fill the arches more, that is because the originals were staggered, slightly wider on the rear, but with the same sized tyre and the reps were all the smaller size, effectively all the same as the fronts on a QS, still worth a decent amount and look good, some spacers on the rears would give some of the effect of the originals, it is quite subtle but does make the car look more purposeful.
