Savile Row tailoring.

I want to buy myself a made to measure suit, but cannot find a good tailor locally so I am thinking of going to Savile Row.

It will be a simple, slim fitting, two-piece suit in a contemporary style. I have considered Richard James and Kilgour, but can anyone suggest any good alternatives please?

If you’re thinking of Savile Row, then I presume that you’re within striking distance of central London.
Check out Threadneedleman, in Walworth Road, SE17, coming from the Elephant, it’s on the left, between Browning Street, and East Lane.
I’ve had a couple of pairs of trousers made there, and they still look good after more than 10 years, George, the tailor, is meticulous, and tells you in detail why X amount of loops are better on the trousers than X minus, it’s really worth the trip.

The Japanese word for suit is sabiro. The first person in Japan to wear a Western suit was a Japanese diplomat in London, who wore it upon returning to Japan. When asked what is was, he replied Saville Row, or Sabi Row in his Japanese accent.

What is your budget? Are you really looking for made to measure or bespoke? If you’re looking for made to measure then Savile Row is the wrong place.

So where is the right place for MTM? Locally I have had a lot of problems in the past with it.

Not trying to teach you to suck eggs but do you know the difference between made to measure and bespoke?

A made to measure suit is made from a block pattern just like one you buy off the peg but made to your specific size of chest and inside leg etc. These suits can be had from around £300 upwards from places like King and Allen, a suit that fits, Norton and Townsend and even places like Moss Bros to name but a few.

A proper Savile Row suit will be bespoke which means they make a pattern specifically for you and take loads more measurements and then fine tune the fitting through a baste fitting and a final fitting. The range of what you can achieve as an outfit is almost endless and prices start from about £2000 upwards with most Row tailors charging about £4000 for a suit in a decent material with two pairs of trousers.

Yes, I know the difference between bespoke and MTM. To be honest, I'd be surprised if there is more than a couple of Savile Row tailors doing true bespoke anymore.

However, I've had a couple of tailors in the past who've utterly fked up MTM. Hence suggesting Savile Row where they've a a vested interest in getting it right. Even Reiss does MTM, but I won't buy from them because they don't do what I want,

Until last year I worked for Ralph Lauren. You’ll get a nice Polo suit for £900 or up to £7000 for a Purple label. Unless you are a stupid shape get one off the peg and get it finished which is part of the service.

Most Savile Row places apart from the really snooty places will do some form of MTM from the likes of William Hunt at one end of the spectrum price wise to the likes or Huntsman at the other end of the scale. If Savile Row isn’t that important then consider Gresham Blake made to measure (or even his bespoke which is much more reasonable than the Row). Many famous happy clients.

I said what I want in my OP.

The problem is, there's a lot of BS in tailoring. There are plenty of provincial tailors claiming to be bespoke that are actually second-rate MTM,

Hackett on Sloane Street used to have a proper bespoke service ten years ago. Not sure if they still do. Depending on where you are try Connock & Lockie in Lamb's Conduit Str. They do a nice trad English cut.

I've got some Hackett blazers that are very good. I had some Hackett trousers that were st and I threw them way a couple of weeks ago, Quite a pricey buying error when one considers the cost of tailoring.

Maybe i just “fit” in a boss suit but what on earth does 7k get you.

Yeah boss do some nice stuff. Got a Diner Suit from them a few years back and had it adjusted (free). Fits like a glove.
