I think Doves and Pigeons are just different breeds of the same species, like we have different breeds of cats and dogs.

Just remembered; decades ago our neighbour bought his wife a load of doves as a romantic present, they were bloody hateful things, crapping everywhere and ruining my dads vegetables, gradually my dad shot them.
